Well IMO the IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpad series are the best but you won't get much for €1400.

Used a friends Dell Inspiron 9300 for a while, it cost the him €1450. I was very impressed with it, 17in UXGA, XP Pro, 1.86GMz M, 1Gb ram, 80Gb HDD, 128Mb X300 ect. But he got a good deal, €200 off, free 2nd battery and free delivery (before christmass). I think they are doing a similar deal now though.

Laptops are compromises between - big screen , low weight, fast, weight , small size, decent keyboard , low price, long battery life and other features and support levels. Apart from those that are over priced, or complete duds most
    laptops have features to recommend.

    What are your priorities ?

BTW: sony accessories can be pricy compared to other brands, important if you decide to get a docking station and spare power supply later on.

Browsing through this forum, when it comes to particular brands it's a case of "some swear by them" and "some swear at them." Pick a particular brand or individual model and when you go looking for a review you'll find the good, the bad and the ugly. Everything from the "I'd recommend this to anyone" review down to the "I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole" review, for very same model.

I don't really need one, but the idea of having one is nice. I have a desktop at home and although I work in different locations, there is always a computer available for me to use while I am there, so a laptop isn't a necessity for me. Between using them for work by day and using my own at night, I have no problem getting to a computer, so it is rare a laptop would be handy. Still, it would be great to have one. A fairly low spec would do, seeing as I do have access to other computers handily enough.

So, as there are some sales on, I have been looking at some and so I have been browsing on the net generally for reviews, and in here recently looking at what people are saying about the different types. It seems everyone has a different opinion. You see some saying a particular brand is great and others saying it's terrible. You see people saying how their particular laptop packed up within days/weeks/months of purchase and others saying that they have had one of those for ages and never had any problem with it. It's hard to get a consenus. There are many questions:

    Is Packard Bell any good?
What about the Sony Vaio range?
Would you spend money on a Dell?
    Can you trust a Compaq?
Are Acers the king of laptops?
Is Fujitsu Siemens worth taking a risk on?
Is it worth the dosh to buy a Tosh?
    Could an IBM be good?
Should you sink your teeth into an Apple?
Do you like the sound of a Panasonic?
Would a Samsung turn out to be a Delilah?
Are you totally gone if considering buying an Advent?
Would it justify valuable cash to get a JVC?

I could go on, but what are the answers? To all of the above, you'd probably get every answer imaginable. So what do you do? Take a chance? Do a "Quick Pick" and see what you come up with? Or, just stick the money in your pocket and keep it there?

stay away from Packard bell , Advent , Acer etc.

best tgo for HP , toshiba, Compaq or Sony.

Rumour has it Fujitsu-Siemens arent too good either

I personally have found HP to be the most reliable, stable and efficient running machines of all the other brands. I had a PBell before and was only headaches

    Acer why?
Despite the fact that the laptop I bought is slighty damaged(less than asthetic) it is f*cking awesome and robust and well speced for its price.
