Low PSU Output question...

    Hi,

I have a secondary pc for playing lan games with command and conquer generals, quake III, etc.

    Its an 800mhz, 256ram, 64mb Geforce 4 mx machine.

Now, the psu is really crap - it says clear cut on the case its 110w output. Is this really enough to power the whole thing? I know its an old, and low speced machine, but it has

    800mhz
    dvd rom
    256 pc133 ram
    64mb agp geforce 4mx

Does 110w cut the mustard? As I said I know it's an old pc, but that seems like a really low output, and leaves really little room to add anything extra. But as is, is it more then adequate or what? It was an office machine so it came with the usual crap 4mb integrated gfx, which I replaced. Not being new enough to have to be connected to the psu, does the geforce 4 affect the psu....? Will I be able to swap the cpu for a 1ghz chip without consequences?

Thanks. I'd change the psu but its one of those standardised dell type cases which makes it a bitch for changing around.

    Thanks.

Watts are a very "how long is a piece of string" affair.

    I had a p4 1.8@ 2.7, 512DDR, DVDRW, 60GB and Ti4200 128MB running on a crap-brand 150W PSU

Id would say with the MX it should be fine.

It has been my experience in the past that DELL have fitted a PSU / Motherboard with non standard wiring. Which means if you replace the power supply with an off the shelf replacement it could possibly fry the PSU or Motheboard or both. Please check the wiring of the PSU plugs to determine if they are standard or DELL's own standard.
