I did a FAS course on Arc welding a few years ago & it was excellent. You can be misled into thinking that you are a good welder as they use new, clean steel & you are working in a relatively clean area with a steel bench & good earth. Also plenty of assistance in getting the power settings right. When you try is at home on a rusty bit of steel or angle iron, it's a different ball game.

    Worth doing it,

    T.

    Hey David
What welding kit did you get (your Santa must be better than mine) ?

I'm looking at 150amp kit from http://www.toolsbypost.com but also need to but some clamps, grinders and consumables of course.

I haven't found any classes as such other than FAS which isn't ideal for me time/location-wise.

I'm just up the road from you (Clonsilla) so was looking for nightclasses in Clonsilla/Blanchardstown but there's nowt unless you're into flower-arranging or oil painting

not sure what ampage it is, but it's a cosmo, so could be the cheapy one on this page: http://www.toolsbypost.com/category.php?id=148

i'm thinking of doing a car maintenance course in kylemore college aswell.
haven't started looking for welding couses yet, but i'll let you know if i find any locally.
ideally i would do a course in electric arc welding as that's the only equipment i have. there's no point in learning about equipment i have no access to.

No not much on courses, etc. but would recommend Auto Self Darkening Visor... saves a lot of hassle.
Long sleeved gloves, saves a few burns
and some mask filters, saves your lungs.

But do take some Evening, or FAS courses, there you will get to use all sorts of welders, Mig, Tig, Gas, AC/DC, Wire, FluxCore and Gas Shield, Stick, Overhead and vertical....

And how to use a welder to remove bearing races, without causing damage.....;)

I did an evening course in Dundalk IT last year. It covered all types of welding, gas, MIG, TIG, Arc etc. It was only a 10 week course but it gave a good grounding in the basics. I'm sure there are similar courses closer to you although with the new motorways, Dundalk isn't so far away any more......
