Does anyone know if there is any truth in the rumours I have heard that Dublin Bus is due to cut their tallaght services by 20%, (if they havent already, its been a nightmare trying to get home in the evenings since November), the 77 routes and 56A specifically?

Ive heard this from about five people but cant seem to find anything on the net about it. The theory behind it is that the Luas is sufficient. If this is the case, I wonder why every bus I get home is full and passes you by/ you cant get a seat.

There is a review of the Tallaght network on the way but I wouldn't believe the 20% reduction. The last big Tallaght change was in the mid 90s and Tallaght has changed a lot since then, so for many people this review will be welcome.
From what I know, some of the changes include the extension of most Tallaght routes to Ringsend via the new Pearse Street bus lane. This will remove the large amount of buses on Eden Quay and free up a bit more space on the street, along with improving the look of the new Quay wall/Boardwalk.
In Tallaght itself, the 54A is rumoured to be extended towards Ellensborough and Kiltipper. This is an area which badly needs a new service considering the amount of new housing which has gone up there in recent years. There is also a plan to change the routing of the 50 and 77, the exact routing I'm not too sure of, but I'm guessing the 77 will be extended to Citywest replacing the 50.
I wouldn't be too quick to believe the Luas rumours, the Tallaght line is a lot different to the Green Line where we saw a reduction in the 48A service. The only route which may have sufffered because of Luas is the 56A at Kingswood and Belgard. A change to this route may mean it is re-routed away from the Luas at the Square and terminate somewhere else.

Dublin Bus carried out a major survey of Tallaght last year, involving meeting residents and having open days at The Square. I would imagine any changes made in the coming months will have been carefully thought through and are a response to Tallaght residents in improving the service.
