CD/DVD drive unresponsive

The title pretty much covers it. I've got a DVD drive and CDRW that are being picky about when they want to work. If I were to put a cd in either drive right now it would not be detected and I'd be told to insert a disc. However if the cd has been in the drive from the time I boot up it can be accessed fine. Both drives work ok in safe mode and I've updated the drivers for them to the newest versions. I've had no issues with burning cds despite the problems, just pop in a cd at any time and it'll burn ok. To be honest I've had this problem for a while now and I thought maybe service pack 1 had something to do with it. Anyone able to make sense of the problem?

    Thanks

Sounds like a problem with some kind of copy protection, starforce and sony's 'rootkit' being the first two to come to mind. Google should turn up plenty of ways to see if you have either of them and to remove them if nessecary. Of course removing them could cause problems for whatever installed them in the first place, but reinstalling the game (starforce) might work, and I think Sony are offering non protected replacements of their CDs free.
