Question - Can this Router use CAT6 cable?

Hi I have one of these, SMC2804WBRP-G
Barricade™ g Wireless Broadband Router with Built-in USB Print Server

which is working fine (currently browsing on it).

I'm trying to connect another machine using CAT6 cable but I can not get it to work and I'm beginning to think its the cable. The computers are fine (they will work with another cable) but as soon as I use the CAT6 cable - no go.

The router specifies that it is a '10/100 Ethernet' machine, surely this doesn't this mean I can not use Gigabite cable (CAT6)?

I would have said that the Cat6 cable should work fine, just at 100 mbit speeds. Never know though...

Does anyone else know whether a '10/100 Ethernet' router will work with CAT6 cable?

What lights are on working on the PC and on the router ?
try the cable the other way arround - are they same - if not then may be a cable problem.

is one of the ports labelled uplink ?
Don't forget you may need a crossover cable with some - but yours has 4 ports so it's a switch and can use normal cables - borrow one to test

    Hey Capt,

Router indicates that all is okay (led wise) but XP says repeatly indicates that "a network cable is unplugged".

    Hey Capt,

Try another cable they are only a couple of euro.

Could also be the NIC on the computer - Have one somewhere where the light goes on and it can recieve packets but not trasmit them, same message as above and you could look at traffic with windump but just didn't want to play ball. If it was a cable problem then I'd have different symptoms when cable swapped. Unless both TX and RX pairs were bunched in the cable

Could also be a driver problem.. but unlikely

the fact that it'sa cat6 cable will have next to zero effect on its compatability. if anything, cat6 is very pure oxygen free copper and will help. more than likely, the cable is crossover or has been terminated incorrectly/badly and there's a break in one or more of the pairs.
