There are a lot of models out there and I know little in this field, not having bothered with one before now. So I ask for some suggestions.

I would like a 40gb one, priced between 200-300e or so. [strike]Preferably plays video[/strike](actually that does not matter, would just like the portable hard drive capability really) and does not need to have software installed to connect to the various pcs that I will be using.
    So mateys, any suggestions?

Your price range is a bit hopeful and restrictive there. Add on another ton and your chances of finding something decent with the specs you require will greatly improve.

Having looked round on the net for a good few weeks now I have seen a few matching what i want with pretty decent prices. The differences of the particular ones elude me though. Might look around tomorrow and find one to get peoples opinions on.

If you tell us what you've seen that, as you say, "match what you want and have pretty decent prices", then by all means post and tell us the makes and models and I'm sure someone here will give you a decent critique/comparison of them and make some suggestions for you.

    40 or 20 gb option.
Probably go for 40gb and try to get the best price I can from wherever.

There are plenty of 20gig irivers (h10 model) floating around ebay for little over the $200 mark.

AFAIK you can't get the 20gig model any more, and the 40gig is hard found. But yeah, it fits your specs to a tee!

Believe it or not the H300 is an old model and isn't actaully made anymore! Bloody stupid IMO as it's still better than an awful lot of players out there at the moment.

iRiver don't make the H3XX series any more - they've gone "end of life" with them (far too early IMHO). Because of this, retailers supplies of them have dried up and stocks are dwindling. That's why they're hard to find.

Sigh, ebay I guess, unless those dwindling supplies are not dwindled. Thanks for the info guys.

    No problem.

I like the word 'dwindling' ;)

Someone posted a link a few weeks ago to a website that still had H340's in stock. Cormie maybe? Will see if I can find it. Dont think you have any chance of a H320 though.

The H340 is a fantastic player, go for it! Try to get the international version if you can. With the quality of the DAP itself and Rockbox firmware now pretty stable, you really can't go wrong.

I'd imagine ebay would be your best bet at this stage.

Sorry, looked and couldn't find it. There's a good chance it'd be dead by now anyway.

Verrryyyy lucky find for you!! Congrats you will soon be in posession of the best DAP for music listening purposes that there is! Now order an iSkin and a nice set of earphones (look for wind130 on ebay, get some shures, great headphones at great prices) and you're sorted!

    Lo,

I got a 20gb creative zen touch great sound from it nice budget mp3 player, my only dislike is the menu functions which could be improved on.

Overall I would recommend it to anyone thinking of purchasing an mp3 player in the near future.

ps: anyone know where I can get a replacement data cable for my creative zen touch? thanks.

Zen touch is a fine basic mp3 player alright, does the job just fine, like yourself, I think the menu system could be improved too.

The data cable for the Zen touch is just a regular USB cable, the most common type, if you're not sure which to get, just bring the zen into your local electronics store. Don't pay more than €9 for the cable as that would mean you're being ripped off. €9 is still pretty expensive for one but anyway:) They can be picked up for about €5/€6 in Dublin (peats/maplin etc)
