Dell 32" LCD - Almost a bargain!

Dell introduced their 32" LCD model last month (just when they sold off the 26" models which were such a bargain). The 26" model price was a mistake - so I was told by a Dell employee and a large number of them were bought up by Dell employees.

Anyway, they've made the same mistake with the 32" model in the Sky Magazine for January. On page 11 they advertise the 32" model as down from 1259 to 1007euro. The actual starting price was more than 1800 euro so they've made the same mistake as they did with the 26" (they showed an orginal price of 729euro discounted by 25% instead of over 1000 euro which was its real original price).

The problem is that its on the magazine as available from 29th December to 1st Feb but its not there when you go online. They have no code to identify it. I'm going to try ringing them tomorrow to see if they will give it to me at that price when I mention the Sky deal because at just a grand its a real bargain - HD ready with 720p etc.

If someone works out how to avail of the offer please post it - its just a pity they didn't put a code with it (maybe its a trick).

    Kieran

I already rang them about the offer in the sky mag last friday and was told they would not honour it. :(

I feel another APPLE/OLYMPUS style battle coming up.......

I know that advertising in the press is different from in-shop signs and websites.

Anyone know the full implications of this advert.

You could complain to our wonderful ASAI, www.asai.ie

They will probably spend 3 months investigating and eventually find Dell in breach of advertising standards and seeing as the ASAI have no teeth whatsoever they will give Dell a slap on the wrist and say "naughty boys, don't do that again".

And Dell wont give two hoots...

what about those lexsor lcds, have seen a few of them around going at a pretty good price. Was looking at a Lexsor 32" LCD HDReady TV, in a local store, for 1200.

I picked up a maxim 32" lcd tv for €950 in Currys last week. Working out well so far with the attached htpc I built up. Could be the same ones gazzer mentioned seeing in Dixons.

I bought the Lexsor 32'' from Currys on Monday for €1099, down from €1499. It is advertised as 'Deal of the Week', so I am not if it will be that price for the duration of the Sales or just for the week.

Slightly off topic I know but anyway I'm thinking about buying one of these and am wondering if it is really worth my while as i only have the ntl basic (12/13 channels) and no digital tv feed in the house. Do you need the digital feed to make these lcd tvs really worth while?

ps. have seen a few in peoples houses running basic ntl and the picture quality looks less than perfect to be honest.

    cheers

HDTV's are best on HD Signal, Average with digital signal (dependant on the source) and pretty bad with analogue signal.

I would agree. I have the basic NTL and its not a stunning reception to start with. Its adequate reception wise but since one of the main reasons is to be able to run my htpc over the lcd tv its working out really well. The picture quality of divx or dvds on the screen is really sharp and looks great.

isnt this false advertising from dell

its a breach of the consumer act right

if i wanted the tv [which i dont]

i would complain to the unbudsman [spelling]

i would ring dell up and , my god i would demand the tv for the price it was on the sky book

Not really, they just put it down to E&OE (Errors and Omissions Excepted) which you'll find burried in the small print.

And as far as I know the pricing on the 26" LCD TV before Christmas was not a mistake but a clearout price to dump stock.

Wish I'd been quick off the mark on that one!

    Yep, it will always say:

"Prices and specifications are correct at date of publication but subject to availability or change without notice. Dell cannot be responsible for errors in typography or photography."

And it was a mistake to mark the 26" so low, but since they were introducing the 2 new larger screens they let it run as they would have had to clear stock soon anyway.

    I hope more mistakes happen.

anyone elses experience of basic ntl picture quality through HD ready lcds? seems like alot of money to splash on a tv when you can get a better quality picture from a regular crt tho no?
pardon my ignorance :D but what is a htpc?

    Home Theater Personal Computer
i.e. a PC that does everything you want from your home theater, e.g. play your DVDs, TV, CDs..

I know someone who works in Dell and what he has told me is that it was the same mistake for the 26" and the 32". They quoted the sterling price as euro. Its the same office which deals with both UK and Ireland. They did let it run before Christmas but this time the mistake didn't make it to the website so we'll never know what would have happened if it did.

Never mind - just keep an eye on their website so see if other bargains pop up.

Dixons (Jervis St shopping centre) have a Lexsor 27-inch LCD TV for €800. Not sure what it is like though. Personally I am holding out for a Dell 32inch and another smashing price drop....

A bit off-topic but... I know Dixons and Curries are the same company but does Curries do a find this item for a lower price and we refund the difference?

I picked up an lcd tv for €950 last week in Curries and it appears to be the same one in Dixons but for €899.

If I happen to toddle out to them and mention the price difference who rates my chances of getting the €51 out of them? :D

I find that rather hard to believe tbh....since the price drop happened in the UK as well as here, and the UK (ie £stg price)

The way I recall it going down, the w2600 dropped in price initially from ~€1100 to €749 (thread in here alerting us to the fact) and then 2-3 weeks later, it dropped again (both here and in the UK) to €565. At the same time as this was going on the 19" model too, fell by the same % rate both times, both here and in the UK....now it would take the mother of all f*ck ups and sheer incompetence on a lot of administrative levels to allow ALL of that as a mistake to make it to a point of sale....whilst there is no doubt it was a hell of a price, it wasn't so far behind what 18 month old technology has dropped by in the same period; better to sell at a slight loss than to have a warehouse full of unwanted units in the run up to christmas.

    Anyone looking for a bargain in HD TVs could probably do a lot worse than this from pixmania;

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/166235/art/samsung/le32t51b-32-16-9-lcd-tele.html

€1120 for a 32" samsung is a very good deal imo, even though pixmania have a bad rep on these forums

To get the best deal on a dell lcd try this:

    buy it with a pc....

    goto www.dell.ie/epp
select the cheapest pc , or get a decent one if you or a friend is buying, or ideally a company that can get the vat back :-).

Now on the second page of options add your 32" or 37" LCD.
You will find that when purchased with a desktop the price of the lcd is reduced by about 180 euro.

If you can get the vat back and sell the computer, you can get the 32" for about 1100 , or the 37" for about 1567 euros
