Worth buying a PS2?

Have been planning on buying a DVD player, and have hemmed and hawed before about getting a PS2. Do folks here reckon it's worth it? I can get one new for €150..offset €50 odd for what I would have paid for a DVD = €100. I have a mate who has a ton of games so ain't too worried about buying any just yet..well, maybe TT Superbikes :D
    I can also get a pre-owned PS2 in Game for about €70.

I'm not interested in getting/waiting for a PS3..I play mostly PC games, and wouldn't shell out the asking price for a PS3. Not interested in any other console, as the only games I can borrow are for the PS.

    Thanks

Old style PS2s have terrible DVD playback. The slimline's is better, but you'd also want a DVD remote control if it's for the living room, unless you want the controller cable across the floor.

It's also in its old age now, so support is going to die off over the next 6months or so. But there's an unequalld back catalogue of games there, if you're not the type of person who needs the latest games and graphics.

PS3's not too far away if you're willing to hold out. It'll be expensive, but will play dvds and blu ray (a new high-def dvd format, which we'll eventually have to migrate to), as well as PS2 games.

So, do you want a cheap stop-gap or expensive cutting edge?

I wouldn't buy a second hand old style PS2 especially if you are going to use it for DVD playback. Not only is the playback not very good but the laser is very cheap and will probably stop working after about 1-1.5 years if it is in use a lot.

Definitley worth getting a PS2, Im not aware of any laser problem or poor DVD playback. Its as good when I got it 3 yrs ago. You'll probably be waiting at least 6 months for PS3 tbh and if you just wanna watch DVDs its not worth the price. Blu ray will not be the standard for a long time yet and im sure any new movies will be available on DVD anyhow.

They are very prevelant, I know at least three people who have had to get their PS2 replaced due to broken lasers. If you compare DVD playback on the old PS2 (never used a new one) its horrible compared to any standalone DVD player, and it can only output composite.

Mine broke, stopped loading discs... is now completely useless. Am thinking of running it over in a car. Managed to get a free replacement off a friend who'd upgraded to an xbox.

Your friend has games, you need a DVD player and you don’t want to wait for the PS3, so yes.

I think there are newer models of the large PS2 which have improved DVD playback, maybe I'm wrong, but the playback with my second PS2 would be fine for 99.9% of people.

The slim PS2 is top loading, so if you’re stuck for space it may actually take up more room.

I still don't think it would be a problem as its so small anyways. When its openeded, it will probably still be lower than a standard ps2 anyways. You can slide it in horizontally when openly only a bit

cheers for the replies..my mate has has his PS2 since they first came out, about 4 years(?) and has had no problems. I have heard of folk having disk read error problems alright..that was one thing that would put me off buying a used PS2.

hmm..can get a new slimline in Argos for €150..guess I'd need a mem card too though..

    *ponders €60 for a cheap DVD player or €150 for a PS2*

I wouldn't spend more that 100 on a ps2 even the newer models. If you search ebay, you can get a second had one for little or nothing. Some even come with games. If you do enough searching you may be able to afford both the ps and a dvd player ;) .
I never liked using the ps2 as a dvd player though.

It's a good time to get a ps2 (or xbox\gamecube for that matter). You can pick up some excellent games on all 3 consoles quite cheap now.

Have had a look on Ebay..am a bit wary of buying one without seeing it functional first..also they aren't that cheap on there when you factor in postage from the UK..most seem to be sold from there. Hardly any for sale in the buy and sell at the moment too, and no pre-owned in stock in any shops..
