PGR3 & Quake 4 advice

Buachaillí - just got my grubby mitts on an xbox 360 the other day and am well happy with it. I got it mainly for the media side of things – I will be using it as a Media Center Extender (if I ever solve this poxy Invalid Connection Data issue) and am delighted with the quality of the visualizations (you have to stream remote music via Media Connect for this) but also want to play a few games the odd time.

I’m not a serious gamer and will only play a couple of hours a week, but will probably get into Pro Evo 5 when I get it. For the moment I have PGR3 and Quake 4. The thing is I suck ass at both, and I mean really bad. Every other racing game I’ve ever played I’ve been able to get the hang of easy enough especially with all the easy stuff turned on. With PGR3 I just seem to hit every corner and get massive amounts of oversteer – I hit think I’m taking a good racing line but the oversteer kicks in and I end up hitting the inside of the corner. The manual is useless and its annoying the way the game points out what moves you get points for without hinting how to do it. When I even touch the handbrake things get messy.

I’ve only played a couple of games of Quake and really like it but could barely hit jade goody if she was wobbling about. Any advice on how to improve at either of these games is much appreciated.

So I went onto Xbox live to have a laugh and thought there’d be a losers corner I could join to play against similar amateurs and maybe the odd blind chick, but it seems everyone I come against knows what theyre at. Wasn’t impressed with the xbox live setup process for either game – couldn’t make out whats goin on, and couldn’t get into any playtime games in PGR3 – could only get in on career mode. Is there any secret way of finding suitable games I’m missing?

Please help cos I just have to get good enough to whip some Frenchies to shut them the hell up ;)

For PGR3 it sounds like you are either accelerating in the corners, or entering the corner with to much speed. Try braking earlier and only accelerating out of the corner.

Quake is just going to take practice and getting used to the controller.

yea, what Ciaran500 said and also I have found that attempting to drive with less urgency and being smooth on the controls improved my laptimes no end.

I'd also recomend sticking to a car and a track on Live until you are comfortable and winning the odd race or 2. Trust me the sense of achievement when you win that first race online is worth the effort ;)

    thanks.

Yeh I probably am making those mistakes but man is it sensitive and you have to break very very early to avoid crashing. I'll give it more practice - what class of car should I be using (actually whats the difference - manual doesnt mention anything)? I think its a class game, and it feels way faster on the tracks I've played than it did on the demo kiosks, maybe cos theres more trackside articles.

What camera view would you recommend I use? And where should I look for decent online games?

Yeh Quake will take a bit of practice, though in the online deathmatches I played I felt I was hitting the oponent a few times, admittedly while splaying bullets around as my aim went from side to side, but every bullet they shot seemed to hit me and I'd be dead in no time. I haven't played a game like this since the first Doom on the PC and the key to that seemed to be the ability to straff/shaft? which was basically walk side to side, guess thats key here again right?

How can I find Xbox Live games against similar suckers like me, cos if I can't I think its a mistake as its very off putting for beginners.

The different class of cars are to do mainly with there performance A being highest performance, E being lowest performance. this is also used in live so that you don't get guys in F50GT's racing against high end road cars etc. so by selecting say a Ferrari 355 for a live race you will only be pitted against other class E cars. I have found the racing in class E to be the hardest as almost everyone uses the 355 and it really comes down to your own ability rather than the car.

The one you are most comfortable with, for me that's the in car, but it's a personal preferance thing really

This is a toughey, one way is to provide feedback on others at the end of the race. you can choose to avoid a player for a number of reasons and one of those is skill level, you can also of course "prefer" a player and that increases the chances that you will race them again. Other than that your best bet is to build up yer friends list and race with them to get used to live

*edit* feel free to add me to your friends list if ye wanna race. I'm pretty mediocre but at least I won't run you off the track deliberatly :)

    thanks lads.

Will try get a bit of practice in over next couple of days and play around with camera angles...the one inside the car is probably the hardest for me but maybe the one I'm using (default) isnt the best either.

Just one thing though - it seems that you need to antilock it quite often...i.e. steer the direction you want to turn then the opposite way to either slide or avoid oversteer - does that sound right?

Last night was my first online game ever and have to say it was fairly mad alright, do people talk much on it cos it was only now and then on the ones I played? Nobody seemed helpful though - i.e. I asked some basic questions in quake and got no reply. Still though, the sense of sheer pride I felt when I managed to scale the heights and finished 7th of 8 in one race was worth it :D

Nice one, I'll stick you on the friends list, not that I know what that means/does, or who you should invite, but if anyone wants someone on their friends list they can call up to dish out the odd whuppin to 'smutan' is yer only man :p

nice one to those of you who have given me your gamertag here or PM'd it to me - I'll add you's to my list and see you about the place then.

Practiced PCGR3 tonight and got much much better at it. not good, just not as bad as I was. I'm sticking to the E Class cars for the moment as its all I can control as yet.

I was able to go into the online section of Playtime section and create a race which others joined. but when I try to join an existing Custom Race I get an 'unable to communicate with all other players' error. How do I know which races I can join and how do I join, or is it just that they are kicking me out?

i get that a lot too. No idea what causes it. I just stick to career mode because of it.
