New Elliott movie charts magic mushroom odyssey
    December 31, 2005 - irishexaminer.co

The latest film from the creator of Man About Dog and The Mighty Celt looks set to be a road trip with a difference.

Pearse Elliott’s third feature – which is due to begin filming early in 2006 - is about a group of Americans who visit Ireland to sample its magic mushrooms.

Elliott, who wrote Man About Dog and wrote and directed the Mighty Celt, said ‘Shrooms’ would be smart and exciting and was aimed at a young adult film-going audience.

He is hoping the film, which is backed by the Irish Film Board and the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission, will break into the international movie market.

The non-linear story follows six Americans who travel into rural Ireland in search of Irish magic mushrooms because they’ve heard so much about them, he explained.

“When they take them, things begin to happen and you don’t really know whether it’s real or not,” he said.

The cast has yet to be confirmed, but will be made up of a mixture of American and Irish actors, while the crew will be home-grown, he said.

Despite describing the chance to direct high-calibre actors Robert Carlyle, Gillian Anderson and Ken Stott in The Mighty Celt as a superb experience, Elliott has handed the director’s mantle for Shrooms to Paddy Breathnach.

It is the second time Breathnach has directed a screenplay written by Elliott, after collaborating on the successful 2004 film Man About Dog.

“Because of the success of Man About Dog, it was a no-brainer to do another project that involved both of us.

“This is a bigger film than we’ve done before,” Elliott said.

“Man About Dog was a success here, and established itself on the Irish landscape.

“I want this film to be successful internationally,” Elliott said.

He said the production had been well supported by the Irish Film Board and the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission.

“They have really set their stall out supporting talent here,” he said.

Man About Dog earned 10 Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) nominations while the Mighty Celt garnered Gillian Anderson the Best International Actress IFTA and was nominated for three other categories.

But Elliott said he was more concerned about getting people to see Shrooms than aiming for awards.

“I just want the punters to go and see this film,” he said.
