Memory card freezing PS2

Whenever I go to select the memory card option from the browser menu on the PS2, 2 or 3 save game icons will pop up (out of about 8 or 9), but then the whole machine freezes and has to be reset.
Last week I didn't even get this far, only the first icon appeared before the PS2 froze.

The bastard memory card is the official Sony 8mb one, and the PS2 is the old model (purchased November 2004)

Any idea as to what the story is?

Has your PS2 fallen or did the memory card get stepped on or something like that. The data card inside it could be cracked if it has or it could simply be strained from use. Both these reasons can cause your console to freeze as a result, just like a faulty file on a computer.

Just to make sure try using another memory card in your PS2 to see where the fault lies. If the same thing happens with this memory card somehow your PS2 is damaged. It can't be worn out because its just over two years old. The old model tends to be a bit more reliable then the newer one as well.

Thanks for the help. The console and memory card have never been damaged, so it may be the data card inside like you said. I'll try it with another card.
    Thanks.
