Are you scanning the photos at print quality settings on your scanner? When you see the Epson Twain window on your screen check the resolution setting. For prints it should be between 250 and 300 dpi. There is no reason why you should not get good prints from jpegs provided you have the originals scanned at the correct resolution. Images destined for the net on the other hand require a resolution of around 75 dpi but they will not produce good prints. I wonder is that where your problem lies?

scan them so the pixel size (forget about dpi, it's meaningless for digital files) is at least 1800 pixels at the wide end. for better quality, scan them bigger than that

scan them at the higest quality settings. if you have lots of hard disk space save them as tif files, if not, save them as jpg files with the higest jpg quality setting
