Just noticed that AMD have released a socket 754 venice (90nm) 3000. Costs about 150 euro from komplett including delivery.

Would this be a better buy than a 3700 clawhammer (130nm) which i think i can get for about 180'ish euro? Clawhammers are bastids for heat so i believe...

Would be going into a shuttle sff along with a 6800gs (i hope the psu can take the strain).

Concerned about heat but i reckon i could overclock the venice based cpu and still keep the temp reasonable. according to the stats it's only 51watts

The venice will overclock to around 2.6ghz on stock voltage so it wont put alot more strain on the PSU, and yes the venice is more efficient, the 130nm uses 85watts i think and runs on higher voltage which causes more heat

If you are looking for base performance not including Overclocking, Obviously the 3700+ is the best choice. As for overclocking it would be the venice, although It depends on what RAM you use or what chipset you are using, and I amn't sure if 90nm venice' overclock aswel on socket 754 as they do 939.

But tbh, Id go with the 130nm 3700+. It won't make any difference the 130nm or 90Nm, to a normal PC user. It will be a few 'C lower, But thats fine. The 130nm is hardly not going to not function because its 130nm ;)

if your planning to over clock the 3000 you will have to make sure that the mobo has a pci/agp lock to get the kind of speeds previously mentioned.

If you want, you could wait a little longer and they'll probably roll out more 754 Venices including one with a clockspeed you're looking for.

    All sound advice. Thanks.

Yeah, i'm new to 64bit platform but i don't thonk my motherboard shuttle effort (fn85) will have a lock.

Find it strange that AMD have released a venice type chip on the 754 as they seemed to be phasing the chipset out. Not really sure if they'll release more or if it's some sort of experiment at the lower end.
