Anyone given up on TV?

I think the title says it all, I myself have given up watching the most part of television, mainly becasue the content of TV nowadays is pure ****e. Television is now dominated by soaps, reality TV (why can't it go away!?!), American sitcom rubbish, so on so forth. Our TV licence money is going down the toilet, and for what, looking at a bunch of idiots in a house doing nothing for a month or looking at a bunch of talentless goons make a fool of themselves by trying to sing pop songs, which in the end, they dominate our radio (which is also rubbish). In saying all of that, I do watch occasionally Mythbusters (for Kari Byron:D ) and Top Gear.

How about the rest of you?

I have a TV in my room with a sweet sound system and no channels. If I want to watch a television show, I pick up the DVDs. I haven't watched broadcast TV on any sort of regular basis for about two years.

I have to agree. In general whats on here is crap. Not sure what your looking for exactly but i've found the following shows really entertaining and redeemed my view of TV:

    LOST
    Battlestar Gallactica
    Surface
    Invasion

Getting them here can be tricky though.

Your mind hasn't been polluted by reality TV and the like. Keep it that way!;)

I watch less TV now than ever. And what I do watch tends to be factual stuff and I dont mean docu-soap or un-reality telly. I watch sport, current affairs documentary (like The New Al Queda) arts/history stuff and the odd comedy like Extras and drama series like Spooks. The rest you can keep.

    Mike.

It's interesting to see how things are changing for television - many young people now (inevitably it's young, not older) only watch DVDs, or download from the internet. Essentially it's not engaging with television at all - it's just another form of watching American films, as one would watch cinema releases. There's no connection with television, either as a medium, or as an outlet for programme content. The fact that these DVD programmes were at one stage broadcast on television is as good as irrelevant.

How far this will go has been debated for decades on end, and inevitably it'll be much less radical than what we expect, as has been proved time and time again. Even so, you can see major dramas, series and films being directed towards DVD/Internet in one form or another into the future, with broadcast television 'specialising' somewhat in news, current affairs and factual/feature/documentary content.

There is nothing like the immediacy of television in conveying news and current affairs, and it looks set to remain dominant in that respect. And even in drama we tend to get carried away about what may happen - at the end of the day it's just major American series and the odd 'cult' UK/US programme that are popular on DVD - and only amongst 15-34 generally, a tiny section of a vast audience and a vast array of programming.

I'm not a fan of TV anyway.. but.... Coronation Street Pantomine repeat...

I've given up the tiny bit of hope that remained.

yes, i saw that on the TV3 listings for this evening. they really do know how to captivate an audience

I was literally just thinking about this when I saw the title of this thread.

Anyway, the few times I do sit down in front of the tv, it's for specific things like a champions league match. I find ads drive me crazy and I have to mute the tv while they're on. Watching shows/movies ad free on the computer has caused this.

I'm struggling to find any comedy/drama series that interests me at the moment. The news I read online.

I'm just grateful for things like wikipedia which can keep me entertained for hours, drifting from topic to topic.
    And of course, Usenet :D

I haven't owned a TV for 2 years or so. Anything I want to watch I download or buy on DVD and watch on the PC.

When my last NTL bill came due I looked at it and thought, hmmm, I'm paying them to turn me into a zombie. So I rang them and told them to take it away.

A guy came to the door and said spitefully "I'm here to cut off your NTL".

"Great!" I said. "Work away - if you need anything, just shout." He seemed puzzled.

I have RTE1 and 2 and TG4; I think I'd probably have TV3 too if I tuned the aerial a bit, but I never have. Watch it about once a fortnight now. Fabulous.

No interest in T.V anymore, the quality of terrestrial programming in this country is a joke - I might watch an hour and a half in total a week. RTE they're bad - but they sure as hell aren't as bad as TV3 which is a channel of permanent ads.

Ah, TV3. I love trying to predict the midweek drama titles. Usually something along the lines of: "A Mother's Pain", "A Mother's Loss", "A Mother too Far", etc.

For well over a year I've watched 99.9% of all my tv programs/docs/movies via my modded xbox, its gotten to the stage that for anytime I DO actually use normal tv I try and fast forward it or pause it using my xbox remote.
    It can be very annoying..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

I still use it for football matches and some bbc stuff that is not downloadable. Added bonus is there is no ads.

I don't think I've watched an actual 'show' on RTE, TV3, ITV, CH4 or Sky for a very long time now. Their own produce is rubbish or dumbed down and anything they import is usually just as bad or is a repeat of a repeat of a repeat....

I sometimes just leave SkyNews on mute and play some music over it. I certainly don't want to hear any of their propaganda but it makes for a nice goldfish bowl effect.

I haven't watched UTV in years. It is quite possibly the worst station around, and they butcher films aswell. I was considering getting rid of the NTL, but I need it for one station only, Discovery Channel.

Which brings me this this, I wonder if it is possible to ring NTL and ask them for BBC1, BBC 2, and Discovery Channel only.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

If you are subbed to the NTL Max package (ie everything) you can step down to the basic 5 euro a month pack which includes Discovery and History channel among others.

Couldn't agree more, in reality, no one really needs any more than 10 channels (three for me!).

If Mythbusters ever goes to on our local stations, it's bye bye NTL.....

It's called SKY+ - it's been around for years now, sucker.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 550 ✭✭✭Telefís

    "A Mother's Pain", "A Mother's Loss", "A Mother too Far", etc.

    lol :D

*sultry voice* "the pain of growing up", "the challenge in moving on", "the agony of losing a child", "the courage to stand up for what you believe"

Atrocity, you'll still need a licence for that television card. Indeed routing out computer tv-card owners is An Post's specialty at the minute :)

no, not the same. I don't want to record or pause live tv. I mean with basic Sky, just have BBC1, BBC2, ITV, CH4, PARAMOUNT, MTV2, HISTORY CHANNEL, THE AMP, SKY NEWS AND bRAVO. Nothing else, pay 20 euro for them, sorted

SKY + is much better than that. You can record 2 things at a time (while watching back another) from over 400 channels - and you never have to watch ads again. Now when I go to watch TV, I just go to my Personal Planner (I can fit 60hrs since I put in a 120GB drive), and watch whatever has been recorded and I Forward the ads at 30x (I can clear an ad break in 6 seconds) - and obviously there's always something I want to watch, since I specifically set it to record.
Sounds better than 10 channels with adverts - I've got 400+ channels to chose from with no ads, and on my own schedule. Granted, most channels on digital are sh*t - but it's always better to have a bigger selection, just in case there's something really good on some random channel.

I scanned through the Sky Lineup I have ,everything bar the Movies.
I have been finding myself watching less and less TV lately.
What shocked me is the number of Gaming/Ring In channels.
    They are everywhere.
The EPG is destroyed by them.
The quality of programming is utter rubbish now.
Before I'd always find something decent to watch ,now the programming is strewn with Reality TV,Lifestyle/DIY Junk and Bingo channels.
I just watch DVD's now and download shows I want from the US.(Itunes of course ;) )

I pay €28.50 to Sky for digital every month but the 12 month contract ends now in March so I'm going to get rid of it then. I have a UK box and decoder card in my room which I watch more that the paid for one downstairs. There's absolutely nothing on Sky Onw/Two/Three any more. It's just repeats of the same rubbish over and over. I'm not paying for that any more. I'll miss the discovery channels for some of the programs allright, but I'll get over it.

I might get another UK card for that on ebay and then I'll at least have all the ITVs, BBCs and so on. ITV2/3/4 tend to have some good shows like First Wave and Earth Final Conflict, which I always liked years ago, plu the CSIs and Law and Order. They'll do me. Anything new I get from the internet and watch on my modded Xbox or the divx player.

Pity I'll still have to pay the licence fee, but I'll be saving the €340 to Sky each year so it's not all bad. I won't have any Irish channels when I get rid of Sky either as I can't get any of them on an indoor aerial. I've tried, and it doesn't work here for some reason. Oh well, I don't watch them anyway.

Don't ITV1 and 2 require a viewing card? Unless you add the channels to the "other channels" menu of course, then they should still work right? Same with BBC3 & 4 which is a bit of a balls. Anyway, handier to have them all accessable easily. I would like to have C4 & Five if I got rid of the Sky Digital package.
