Hey guys the laptop i have is the targa visionary 811A and i currently have no use for it so iv decided it would be fun to install linux on it. One big problem i have is i find it hard enough to find the drivers for xp for this laptop let alone drivers for linux, how do i find out what motherboard, usb, wireless card drivers that ill need?

    Thanks,
Oh and can you recommend a decent linux distro?

Windows Device Manager.. However, the Linux distro should detect your hardware and install appropriate drivers for you.

    Try Ubuntu.

If you want, I can post a LiveCD (This allows you to try Ubuntu without making permanent changes to the HDD) and Installation CD (Self-explanatory) - just lemme know.

These days I find that the only drivers linux systems don't usually have out of the box are wireless lan drivers and 3d graphics drivers, and its usually a doddle to install the wlan drivers. 3d drivers can be a bit of a pain if you have an ATI graphics card, should be easy enough if its an nvidia. To install the nvidia drivers on suse, it was just a case of starting suse's online update utility and downloading the appropriate package, and letting suse take care of the installation.
My experience comes from suse linux 9/10 and ubuntu 5.04/5.10 btw.

a window manager like gnome (default with ubuntu iirc) make it easy to use on a level (much like Windows). the installation is documented online, and is taken through step by step. a word of warning however: BACKUP YOUR DATA FIRST (As a precaution)

Have a glance at http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/ ,see if it takes your fancy and whether you want to subscribe. Linux format, and Linux User&Dev are the only two magazines that I've seen regularly available in Ireland. Easons are your best bet (They're ~10euro a magazine, sub's may be cheaper..)

    Unix forum

PM received. Ubuntu (Live&Install) discs will be sent very shortly.
