    I got a new pc and set up my email account correctly on it.
    It worked fine for a day and from yesterday it will not work properly.
    The connection keeps timing out. (it is set to 1 minute and i tried waiting longer to no avail)

    the account still works on the old computer.

    the error message i get is

    A time-out occured while communicating with the server. Account 'pop.iol.ie'. server 'pop.iol.ie'. Protocol POP3. Port 110. Secure(ssl): No. Error number 0x800CCC19

    i have downloaded all the windows updates and installed them and my os is XP Media Centre

    Check your firewalls.

    To test whether it's outlook or machine(firewall.ahem.):
    Start -> Run -> cmd -> OK
    In the prompt: telnet pop.iol.ie 110

    If successful you should see:
    +OK Solid POP3 server ready

    If you don't - look at your firewall config.

    It was my firewall blocking the connection. Had to uninstall all my symantec products and am still reinstalling!!:eek:

    :confused: I'm having a similar problem, my error reads
    "Your pop3 server has not responded in 300 seconds .Would you like to wait."
    I've been using iol for a number of troublefree years . I last got mail on New Year's Eve but from 1st Jan nothing.
    I have adjusted the time out to 5 minutes , dissabled the firewall and turned off the anti virus but no joy. Can iol be source of the trouble?

    as above - what happens if you telnet?

    After entering telnet ,I get "Connecting To pop.iol.ie..._" followed by a prompt.

    It's more what happens after this point that means something..
    does it eventually time out?

    As above: check your firewall (Particularly if it's NIS,as it lies about being switched off); check your router (IF broadband..); and if all else fails System Restore (If XP)*

    *This undoes any recent system changes (Back to a date,which you choose). Does not affect personal data. It _does_ affect any system changes (Hardware/Software added since the date selected will need to be reinstalled)
    Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore -> Restore.. -> choose a date when it was working OK -> next...next..it'll reboot/takes about 10-15minutes ish.

    :) Thanks Karoma , my email is comming thru but I must disabled NIS each time. Is there a fix for the incompatibility of OE and NIS ?,especially as both programs have been working happily until this recent glitch .

    You'll need to add OE to the Whitelist:
    Go through: http://www.symantec.com/region/reg_eu/techsupp/consumer.html for instructions.

    Failing that, reinstall NIS or perform a System Restore back to when they were working.

    I had to uninstall NIS via a download from symantec (symNRT) and 2 more smaller cleanup tools, as i could not remove it with add/remove programmes.

    Reinstalled it and all working fine now.

    I went straight for the reinstall option , everything is working again including full NIS protection . Once again ,thanks for the help.
