I am planning to buy inspiron 9300 laptop. I mostly work on linux and know that nVidia cards are performing way better on linux than ATI grphic cards. Mostly due to driver support. On dell online store there is no option to select 64MB nvidia card all they have are 256MB very expensive cards. Can anyone tell me why Dell is so keen to promote ATI graphic cards ?

They would have some sort of contract with ATI that would only let them use their cards, same as they have with intel (i assume).

Gateway used to only sell machines with nvidia cards afaik

(the above could be completely arse, im just assuming)

Dell switch between ATI and Nvidia every few years depending on who they get the best deal from when their contract is up for renewal.

I agree. Only thing i was hoping that they at least give their customer an option to select a graphics card other than ATI. They dont allow you to select nvidia card with inspiron 9300, which is a shame. Another thing worth noting is they dont have Linux version of laptops like compaq has. If i am only going to use Linux on my laptop then why i should pay for all this Microsoft mambo jambo.

I am more than willing to know my options, but unfortunately when it comes to price DELL is unbeatable. If you know better option i will be happy to seriously consider it.
    I am looking for DELL's inspiron 9300, 1400EUR approx.

    complaining about ATI ?

Do you remember the S3 / Number Nine's they used to do
    - be thankful.

it's a partnership thing, they would get volume discount etc.

TBH ATI is not a problem compared to Bridgecom network chipsets,
