Have NTL digital & recently got a new widescreen tv. The set top box and the tv are set to the same widescreen format, however the bottom of the screen is cut off. It is particularly noticable on sky news & skysports news where the news ticker is cut in half. Does anybody have this problem or know how to fix it.

    Cheers

Is your tele the 32" or 28" Black Diamond Widescreen? There is a button which allows you to cycle through the screen formats. My only guess is that right now you're screen is in subtitle mode which cuts away the bottom few inches of the screen to assist in subtitled movies. Hope that is of some assistance.

Its the tube of the television the guns inside are set wrong.
The controls for this are inside the television and you will need to bring it to a workshop and let them fix the settings for you.

Try this before you head off to a tv repairman

Try setting the ntl stb to 16:9 format in the settings section
Press Guide, settings (blue button), then select three, then 16:9 format.
then the aspect ration on the remote to correspond with 16:9

If it's a Sony they are a nightmare and are forever knocking the settings.

If it's a Bush or Black Diamond they are best set to 16:9 and the same on the stb

What in God's name are ya on about? It's either the settings on the NTL box or, as just mentioned, the widescreen settings on the TV.

Nothing to do with Tube guns. It *MIGHT* be the height service setting but unlikely. Check the TV is not in some silly zoom mode.

STB to 16:9, EVEN for 4:3 content and EVEN some regulare non-WS tvs that have a WS mode (see menus on TV).

TV at either 16:9/WS or Auto. EVEN if not a WS TV (if the non-WS has the menu item).

Auto generally only works via a SCART lead.

Sometimes you might have to manually select 4:3 on TV.

Auto works all the time on my Mitsubishi via SCART except for DVD player, where I have to manually select 16:9 for one DVD player and manually select 4:3 for other DVD player (i.e. one DVD player says its 4:3 even when WS and the other always says its 16:9 WS even when it isn't).

or it could be the TDA 1170 overheating
    - only if it does this on all signals including teletext.

Someone will be along to explain the technical bits about how the TV recognises the 4:3 vs. 16:9 signal. C4 used to swap back and forth every few minutes ( change the channel to itself and fine again until the next ad break) and it don't seem to pickup the 16:9 on SKY 339.
It's a black diamond too - should be OK on auto.
Also use the SCART lead where possible, don't know if RGB is an option on the NTL box.
on SKY there are letterbox options - one of them FORCES black bars for output on a 4:3 TV - not needed if you have one that autosenses.

Well if it's a newish Sony you'll have the option of turning the "Auto Format" option off.
    Saves you from going mad.;)

Cheers lads, appreciate the help. Nothing seems to be working though. I've tried all the settings on the tv and the stb. I've also just noticed that the ntl menu screens are also cut short by an inch or so also. By the way, its a Sanyo 32" widescreen tv if that helps.
I know that an inch at the bottom of the screen isn't much but its driving me insane - especially when you pay alot of money for NTL digital and a decent tv!
    Cheers

have you checked the menu screens on the digital box. If you go in to the guide and then in to services i think .. something like that you can change the output of the picture from the digi box. maybe something there ...

    Jessica's right.
In the TV settings section of the stb menu, check to see if the Scart AV signal o/p is set to RGB, this can throw the screen off to the left.
