Sorry for bringing this up yet again but had a call from sky yet again asking me to subscribe, my usual question about C4 was answered with YES we do supply C4 on a Irish sub. I have 2 friends over for lunch at the moment who are getting sky installed in jan on the same understanding. Have I missed something? Being reading this site forever and didn't see any change about C4.

The Sky folks on phone often do not realise or know:
    1) You are actually not phoning from UK
    2) Oddly many people in UK and Europe can't figure out which bits of the British Isles (if any) are not part of the U.K.
    3) What exactly is even the UK mix packs
    4) N.I. is now confusing to them as it DOES get C4 and RTE

I rang up the S4C folks in early days for amusement. S4C~digidol was encrypted (FTV) and not on any outside Wales card by default, but you could ring and get it added in Scotland, England and N.I.

I rang 3 times after they "added it" before the penny dropped and they realised it didn't work in the Republic. I have made it quite clear from the start where I was! They were quite apologetic.

I wasn't really trying to waste their time. I was curious as to the implementation of the UK FTV scheme and relationship to Irish Sub cards.

However all my Northern Rugby liking friends and relatives cheerfully rang the number I gave them and were delighted with the extra rugby. Strangely no-one knew they could add S4C~Digidol. Later it was automatically on EPG and went FTA before the BBC.

Yeah, I would agree, it's usually stupidity on their part, but, screw them anyway.... I went to town on an advert a few years ago that advertised CH 5 as part of the Irish package andTalk Sport Radio. Complained to SKY and the Advertising Standards Authority.

I think the cotract for ch4 in nds ends in 2008? - it will probably end about then I reckon NDS dont let companies out of contract easily! nor will astra (remember ch4 has to change to eurobird to prevent signal bleed into europe)
they are the one channel that does however want to be in Ireland! ch5 however explecidly don't!

I noticed on alot of my installs that when the box dialed back to sky for initialisation it would put rte1/2 tv3 and tg4 in the top of the planner! but they would say "program not available" when selected! then if i manually tuned in ch4/ch5 they would be open! in the other channels section of the epg!

I would usually plug out the box for a day and half and disconnect it altogether from the telephone line and it would usually be home free!

This is correct, most people in Europe think that all of Ireland is in the UK, like Scotland and Wales. I supposed it makes sense, we speak English, have a rugby team etc. We're just like Scots to them. Sure didn't Gorbachev send his greetings to queen Elizabeth when he landed in Shannon... I wonder if Dublin was on their list of targets in case of thermonuclear war. The mind boggles.

i am sure you do as you obviously live in an area fortunate enough to have a signal. most of the country however dont

I work for a company that installs/sells SKY here in the republic. I can guarantee that C4 is NOT on Sky, nor is it likely to be in the near future. To be honest, I think it's less of a case of Sky thinking you are phoning from the UK and more a case of them just wanting to sell it to you, so the person on the other end of the phone can get some comission.

You wouldn't believe the sh*t I've been through dealing with people over in Scotland (Sky's HQ). They've also been getting up to some outrageous things relating to poaching customers and stuff.

Basically, they'd tell you black was white.

Eurobird, the satellite with a massive superbeam that covers nearly all of Europe and bits of North Africa? No

Its Astra 2D they'll want to be on. They're currently on 2A North, which has the second smallest beam, after 2D.

well, tbh an average of £50 (probably less now that itv is FTA) will sort evert thing out.
Just make sure your FTV card isnt in the digibox when your phoneline is in. :D

I heard rumour that Shannon was targeted by US during cold war as the Russians have an Oil/fuel Depot there. (Flights from Moscow to Cuba could refuel). I'm sure the military knew which part was which.

I would have thought that the Americans would have wanted the long runway. Plus the fuel was a barter deal with Aeroflot. The Russkies payed for the landing and service charges with fuel. Shannon airport then sold the fuel to everyone else including the Americans. Shannon airport has always had that make money from conflict approach - the cold war and now the Iraq war.

    Are we off topic?

My GF recently got SKY installed and when she went ordered SKY, she was also told that CH4 would be available. SHe didn't do it by phone, she actually went in to a shop in Cork to order it. Not alone was she told that CH4 was available but she was even given the frequency to install it!!!! I've tuned it in and while it gives CH4, you are told that there is not signal.

So, somebody at SKY would want to tell their resellers to get the facts right or else they're gonna leave themselves open to false advertising claims.
