Has your 360 crashed?

I've spotted a worrying trend, my 360 has crashed 3 times in the last 3 days....

Up until then it had crashed once ever so I'm slightly worried. Hopefully it's just a coincidence. Crashes seem to have ocurred completely randomly, the first one weeks ago in PGR3, and then in the last 3 days in Need for Speed, Quake 4 demo, and FIFA demo. Strangely enough it's always happened in menus and not in actual gameplay, so it could hardly have anything to do with overheating. It's always the same thing, system just locks up, no error message or anything, and I need to reset with the power switch on the console.

Considering in the last 5 years my PS2 and Gamecube combined have never crashed without a scratched disc taking the blame I hope this isn't a trend. My PSP has crashed a couple of times too, seems to be more acceptable these days as machines get more complicated.

    No, no crashes here.

No, it's just that a higher majority of people find it acceptable to accept 2nd rate goods (PSP's with dead pixels, loads of people 'tolerate' them ). It's shoddy manufacturing/lazy workmanship (on the part of the programming of the firmware or the actual hardware of the machine). IMO it's not acceptable at all.

Mine locked up on me once in PGR3 whilst sending a message to someone I was racing. Nothing since, although saying that I haven't played it much.

Yea I agree with you, I meant to say it seems the manufacturer's find it more acceptable of course.

I might look into the ventilation of my system, although it's got tons of space really, more than enough for my two old consoles to happily co-exist in there along with numberous other bits and bobs that I made sure to remove and give the 360 space.

had a few lock up's in pgr3 when checking out gamercards while in the lobby and one lock up in cod 2 when i brought up the guide when the game was loading.

the other problem is with the call of duty 2 disk as it has started to crack in the middle  , brought it back to smyths but they had none in stock but will replace it when they get more in .

Once, on it's first day when I came home with it and set it up, without knowing I put my jacket on top of the PSU and started gaming hard, after 30 Min's it reset and I was thinking the worst. When I found my jacket the PSU was roasting (the heat from the vents was HOT) removed the item and continued on gaming the rest of the night.
That was the only time it crashed and it was my fault I guess.

I remember my PSone crashing about 10 times in it's first week and still does to this day every now and then. first Xbox is doing ok, it's never given me any problams at all that I can remember.

Maybe send it back wile you can, 90days is not that long when you think about it.

Locked up once for me, I was looking at gamercards before a deathmatch on Call of Duty.

Came back within a minute though

Around 10 crashes but always the same scenario.
In PGR3 and someone from your friends list logs in, you hit the guide button, their gamertag picture doesnt load and you know its crashed.

Good old Microsoft. Can you plug a USB keyboard into the 360?

I doubt it, crashes will just get less and less.
That friend log in is just related to PGR3 as far as I can tell, its never happened in PD0.

if you can plug a usb keyboard into the 360 does that mean you can map your keyboard controls to any game particularly first person shooters like quake 4, using the WASD setup instead of the joypad would give much better control, anyone got this to work?

Oh I wish,:D ... but no you cant... well not now anyway :(

microsoft have said numerous times that they wont be using keyboard/mouse for games. they want to keep consoles as consoles. they already control the PC market with windows, so they want to make sure the console market is kept seperate.

    (fanboy moment)
sony will have full game support for keyboard/mouse :p

I don't see the appeal of a mouse/keyboard, it'd be very awkward to set up in your living room without a desk and console games are designed with a joypad in mind anyway, I'd imagine a lot of FPS games would be made too easy with the added precision you get.

Fanboy moment? uh uh, Microsoft have said if the game needs it they will support it, if WOW comes out on Live they will let a keyboard and mouse be used.Only if its essential will they let a keyboard and mouse be used.

That's a sensible decision in my opinion. I know a lot will disagree, but I think allowing people to use a mouse/keyboard in any game would kill the enjoyment of online play because of the advantage some players would have.

    Hi,

Well my Xbox 360 crashes a lot and it seems to be a thermal issue, I've even seen the dreaded E71 error message a few times.

It happens when using the dashboard (if I leave the Xbox 360 to download a demo, for example) or playing any of the demo games (Kameo, etc) on the hard disk - although PDZ also crashes but not PGR3. Strange. Some days it doesn't crash at all. Again, strange.

Anyway, I've called Xbox Customer Support and they're taking it away to be "fixed" (or I'll get a new one back).

    - Neil

hdd sounds messed up, unlucky, MS support will have no probs sorting it for you though.

that is more than likely what he was saying alright .

but it could also come across that he was just sharing with us the fact that he played project ( perfect ) dark zero for the first time since dec 2nd on 2 player co-op :p

i disagree on the basis that some guys are godlike with pads but are utterly useless with keyboard/mouse. i used to be, but once i got into PC gaming i can't go back. having said that, i haven't played a console FPS in a while, and just today my brother got BF2 on the ps2 and i was kicking a good bit of ass with the pad.

Well it has to be kept a level playing field.
Somebody whos been playing fps with keys and mouse for the last 10 years will very quickly be good and thats not fair, so everyone uses a controller.

No crashes for me at all, playing Kameo and Quake 4, though haven't played online yet.

Mine never crashed even I was playing for around 7 hours per day over christmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭Furp

Mine crashed or to be more accurate locked up on me twice both while playing PGR3.

First time was when I was in the starter garage and tried to enter the first Gemonetry Wars game the screen went blank and stayed like that for a few minutes until i shut the console down.

The second time was also during PGR3 when i brought up the xbox guide while in the PGR3 menus.

Apart from that no problems or error screens and I've been playing as much as I can get time for.

While playing Perfect Dark I fell through the bloody floor, also the machine has hung on me a couple of times, oh dear, here we go.
Reminds me of a T-shirt a friend of mine had, "Windows, What would you like to reinstall today?"
Lets hope the OS gets updated soon to remedy its bugs, also thats a pain in the ass too, the manufacturers rushing out a system whose software has not been tested enough and relying on the public to do the beta-testing for them, same with the PSP, at least the DS and PS2 were working as advertised when we bought them.
