Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Don't know if this has been done before but I feel like putting it to you all anyway. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, many think it's the Smashing Pumpkins greatest (double) album, whether or not you think that I'd like to see what songs you guys think should have made the album if it was pared down to one album and 14 songs. I haven't decided on mine yet. I don't really mean choose all your favourite songs, I mean a mixture as in what you think would make a coherent and full album. Many of the people I know think it would have been better off as one album and that there are too many filler songs, I want to know what everyone thinks. So just list them one to 14.

Should Mellon Collie have been a single album? 64 votes

Impossible, there isn't one track I'd dare lose. In fact I'd like to see the whole thing expanded with the Aeroplane Flies High B-sides and the song that was only on the vinyl version of the album.

Filler songs?, in your opinion mate!

1979, thirty-three, Bodies, tonight tonight, cupid de locke...

All magnificent songs and they're just my standout tracks, IMO it's the best double album I've ever heard.

I think, like GnR with the Use Your Illusion pair, they could have made a truly phenominal album by trimming out half and keeping the best 14 tunes. It is a tad bloated IMO, and pruning out some tunes would have made it stronger, could've been bigger than Nevermind :v:

Not that I'm saying it's chock full of filler, just that it could have been unbelievable if the very strongest tracks had been grouped together with an impact like Mike Tyson's fist into your ribcage.

I'd honestly just leave 2/3 tracks off it or else include tafh songs

    Tonight, Tonight
    Zero
    Bullet with Butterfly Wings
    To Forgive
    **** You
    Galapogos
    Muzzle
    Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
    Where Boys Fear to Tread
    Thirty-three
    1979
    Thru the Eyes of Ruby
We Only Come Out at Night
    Farewell and Goodnight

That was horrible there were so many i didn't wanna cut :(

    "...Said Sadly"
    "Ugly"
    "Cherry"
    "Set the Ray to Jerry"
    "Mouths of Babes"
    "Marquis in Spades"
    "Meladori Magpie"
    "Rotten Apples"
    "Medellia of the Grey Skies"
    "Jupiter's Lament"
    "The Last Song"
    "The Aeroplane Flies High"
    "Transformer"
    "Methusela"

It counts as a second cd :D

This should have been a 4 CD album with TAFH. Every song is brilliant. Even though I find myself listening to the softer pumpkins songs more than the heavier, I still think every song is amazing and wouldn't replace the heavy songs with the softer at all.

no way......the fact that it was bloated and overdrawn is one of the most appealing things about it.......there are only five songs id ever consider losing(Galapagos,Take Me Down,Thirty Three,Lily My ONe And Only,Farewell And Goodnight)....maybe if they were replaced with "Cherry" "Set The Ray To Jerry" "God" "Jupiters Lament" and "Transformer" mellon collie would have been a slightly better album.....but i still think that mellon collie is DEFINETLY the greatest album ever made.........and THe Aeroplane Flies High is brilliant too..:D :D

As I stated, it's the opinion of many people I know, not mine. Personally I've only been listening to it a while, I've been hooked on Siamese Dream and Adore so long that I've only gotten to Mellon Collie now. So as yet I have no fully formed opinion on the matter, although I do believe that some songs on the album are alot better than their others. Also, hopefully the poll was voted on by people who actually listen to the smashing pumpkins otherwise the "never crossed my mind" option would be completely redundant because how could it if they've never listened to it. Anyway, I don't understand these people who didn't like Adore and thought that it was different to the Smashing Pumpkins' usual, I mean some of the quieter songs on Mellon Collie could easily be mistaken for songs on Adore only for the subject matter of the lyrics.

Adore is a lot darker musically too though. Jayyyysus, can't believe somebody mentioned to replace Galapagos:eek: Different tastes I suppose:)

I'd have to agree that there's some very average songs on there. Definitely could've been an all-time great album if it was trimmed down to single-portion size. 'Porcelina...' is a dreadful song, how that got on there is beyond me.

I wonder could I make my own single album out of it...

completely, the build up in galapagos is <3

I listened to adore for the first time in ages, blank page is such a fantastic song.

One of the very few albums i would describe as epic. many of the songs people have reffered to as (possibly) filler i love.... take me down, goodnight and farewell, lily etc.
i love every track on that album. its excessive but thats part of its charm. I feel the album represents the pumpkins at the height of the abilities, before everything ****ed up on them.

Yeah Adore is just amazing, I listened to it so many times at one period that it reminds of that time so vividly, but it wasn't a happy time so hopefully I can bring it into another time frame, I love it so much.

:) I thought most pumpkins fans hated Adore, good to see I'm not the only one who liked it anyway:) I didn't just like it though, I was into it pretty big. Still am and it's a pleasure to relisten to every time I put it on:)

Most pumpkins fans love Adore. It's most Bullet With Butterfly Wings fans that hate it.

I dislike Adore. I got into the Pumpkins with Gish and was obsessive about them, collecting the singles as they came out, etc. Adore just left me cold, as has any of Corgan's work without Jimmy Chamberlin.

Is it not Zwan that a lot of Pumpkins fans truly hate? (I love the Zwan album though ;) )

I quite like Zwan. It's nice to hear a happy album by Corgan. His new album isn't bad either, I like the New Order buzz that I get from it.

Personally I don't think Corgan has ever done anything bad. Some stuff is a bit self-indulgent I'll admit but he's got good quality control (I'm guessing out of the hundreds of songs that were never released that not all of them are good). Mellon Collie has no extra fat or filler in my opinion. Every song works perfectly well on that album.

One of Corgans first bands. There's a little bit on them on Viewphoria. I gave them a quick listen and that's all I could handle.

The Pumpkins were the band of the decade, like Led Zeppelin they have never made a bad album, or even an average one. MCIS is my favourite album of all time so i would say that making it into a single album would have diminished the overall impact. The songs people dont consider great are still good because they add to the general atmosphere of the album, plus while they are playing you know another cracker is just coming up.It adds to the drama. I dont think Corgan would be able to deliver a "concept" album in 12 or 12 songs, he has too many ideas.

Machina is at times my least favourite and at others it is collossal. It's a bit of a dark horse really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 560 ✭✭✭Nidge

Yeah the songs I've heard from Machina are good, but I haven't brought myself to spend the €20 odd euro that HMV expect me to pay for it just yet, too many other things to go for.

Well personally I think it's worth the money. Actually I think the artwork is worth the money alone.

I'm listening to Mellon Collie now. I hadn't actually listened to it for about two years, I remember it being great and it's matured with age. A damn fine album and I know wish to make a more emphatic point that it is perfect the way it is.

Machina can't hold a candle to Adore. There are some good songs but overall the album just feels over-complicated. The whole "Glass" concept was a load of balls too. Machina II has some really good songs mind you.

I think the whole point of making MCIS was to create something truly epic, and in my view, it succeeded. Why anyone would want to remove half of it is beyond me. It's one of the greatest albums of all time as it is! ;)

The artwork, the concept of night and day/light and dark, the lyrics, the videos and the not to mention some of the finest songs corgan ever wrote. Everything about that album is perfect.

Adore is my favourite album of theirs, Gish is the one I like least.

Rotten Apples is a perfect example of a Greatest Hits album. But get the 2 CD version - some amazing tracks on the second disc.

MCIS is perfect as it is, maybe couldve been a triple album??, that might have been over ambitious though, i reckon its probably their most "complete" album, a very 90s album. But i find myself listening to adore the most, id argue that the best songs corgan ever wrote are on that album.

I love MCIS. Every album is different to the previous, each one a different aural experience so to speak ;) My favourite SP album changes constantly.. hehe.. and I don't mind. The only problem I have with MCIS is Cupid de Locke... I 'get' the song.. but I always feel a little silly listening to it.. so if that wasn't there it'd be 100% perfect instead os 99.9% lol. Buuutt...we all need a little frivolity now and then eh?

    =)

Btw SPS rule DAMNIT and are more than likely getting back together, *hi fives the air* mauauaahahah!

How can you not like Gish! It shows the power and angry energy of their youth ! An integral part of them as a whole..they only revisit that pure energy a couple of times again.. even though the energy kinda changed for songs I adore like SIYL ...Gish is amazing :D It has Siva and Rhinocerous and Tristessa on it for diddlys sake!:o

MCIS was my favourite album for years from 1996 on. I don't understand how anyone could want to cut it down to one CD. The only song I would even consider cutting would be Lily (My One and Only) and that has grown on me over the last few years. It is a triumph of an album and I think it will go down as one of the future greats.

Lily is brilliant, for me one of the main reasons I love them so much is the lyrics.. even if cupid de locke/lily are a bit frilly sounding..its more about the kinda raphaelesque lyrics in those ones for me :) Infalliable it seems hehehe:D

It's my favourite album of all time.....what's the point in leaving out songs.....the tone wouldn't be the same....it's wouldn't be Mellon Collie....many said they should have stopped after- I thought Adore was a fab album, Machina I wasn't too crazy on, a few songs on I don't like- too elctronically done for me.....but it has some kick-ass songs also take for example Everlasting Gaze

what about Pisces Iscariot?no-ones mentioned that yet...i know it wasnt a studio album, but some of their greatest songs are there: "Hello Kitty Kat" is so brilliant,a great angry passive-aggressive F**K EVERYBODY kinda song.its especially brilliant if your really pissed off when you listen to it.."Starla" obviously is an epic, and two of my favourite slower Pumpkins songs "Whir" and "Obscured" are there too.personally i prefer Pisces to Siamese Dream (am i the only one????? )
Adore is my second fav. Pumpkins album after Mellon Collie..."Ava Adore" wasd their best single (imo) and the lyrics to "Tear" are among my favourite lyrics ever.
i never really got into Machina or Gish but maybe i just didnt appreciate them as much as i should have...havent listened in a while,so i might do it soon...:D all their albums have at least (the VERY least) 5 brilliant songs...:D :D:)

did you ever read that book "I hate Myself And Want To Die",the one with the 52 most depressing songs?

i was gonna buy it because i heard Smashing Pumpkins and The Cure were there....and iwas thinking what SP song would be there..i had thought "Disarm" because it is depressing (in a brilliant way).but then i realised it was "LandslidE"..and that twat who wrote the book had it down as an awful cover:mad: ...he said billy corgan sounded like someone "with a tennis ball stuck up his colon"  he even went as far as saying he'd prefered the dixie chicks version to corgans.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Even if it's wrong. ;)

The pumpkin's version of Landslide could never match the original, it's still a great recording though and I love the track (I prefer Fleetwood Mac's original, it's such a great song). But I hate the way Corgan is lambasted like that sometimes. I think now and again music writers like to take a cheap shot at Billy Corgan. It's lazy journalism to be honest.
