    *** 28.01.06 BAUHAUS / (No support), Ambassador, 7.30pm, 33.00

Bauhaus is a British rock band (formed in Northampton in 1978) popular in the 1980s. The band took their name from the German Bauhaus art movement, originally going by the name Bauhaus 1919, dropping the latter portion within a year of the band's formation. Although there were bands before them that pre-figured the style, Bauhaus is generally agreed to have been the first goth group. Bauhaus combined a number of influences (punk music, glam rock, and even dub) to create a gloomy, but very passionate sound which appealed to many left looking for something new in the wake of punk's collapse. Their sound proved very influential, inspiring or bringing attention to a whole wave of post-punk groups delving in the intense, gloomy style that would eventually come to be known as goth rock. Bauhaus remains one of the most popular groups of its era and genre.

Their debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead", was released in August 1979. Over nine minutes long and recorded "live in the studio" in a single take, it did not enter the UK pop charts, but remained on sale for many years thereafter. By far their most famous work, its minimalist, free-form nature evoked a mixture of The Doors, early Pink Floyd and experimental Krautrock bands such as Can and Neu!. The song was used to score the first ten minutes of the 1983 Tony Scott vampire film "The Hunger".

After Bauhaus broke up (1983), all members of the band did various solo work. Vocalist Peter Murphy worked briefly with bassist Mick Karn of Japan in the band Dali's Car before going solo with such albums as Deep and Love Hysteria. Daniel Ash has also put out solo albums and released music under the name Tones on Tail with Kevin Haskins and Bauhaus roadie Glen Campling. David J has released multiple solo albums and has collaborated with several other musicians over the years. He is currently working on his visual arts. Kevin Haskins has been making electronic music for video games, and also has been producing musical artists such as Gary Numan.

In 1985, David, Daniel and Kevin formed Love and Rockets, who achieved a US hit in 1989 with "So Alive". The band broke up after seven albums in 1998.

In 1998, Bauhaus reunited for the "Resurrection Tour", which featured two new songs ("Severance", originally written by Dead Can Dance, and "The Dog's A Vapour", which was also featured on the soundtrack for the film, "Heavy Metal 2"). A live album recorded during the tour, Gotham, was released the same year.

In 2005, Bauhaus played a reunion gig at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California on April 30, 2005. No new songs were expected, but Peter Murphy will follow the Coachella performance with his own solo tour to support his new album. He does not typically play Bauhaus songs at his solo shows.

Following Peter Murphy's 2005 tour, Bauhaus has begun a full tour for fall 2005 (North America, Mexico) and Spring 2006 (Europe). Peter Murphy has also mentioned that the band hopes to record new music following the tour.

    The line-up:

    Peter Murphy: vocals
    Daniel Ash: guitar, saxophone
    David J: bass guitar
    Kevin Haskins: drums

They were so amazing! I was so pleased I got in without being IDed (I'm 14). They have spectacular stage presence and were so wonderful live. Best Christmas Present ever :)

Also I want Peter Murphy's Gothic little babies ¬.¬

Fucking satisfying, especially to finally see Hollow Hills live. She's in Parties was also amazing.

Slice of Life was on the setlist but wasn't played. Apperantly there were about one or two encores worth of songs unplayed. Still, two hours of Bauhaus with three (four?) encores was brilliant I have to say. T'was their Irish debut aswell.

    Hi all

V tired and wee bit hung over from the club and the Kopparberg Pear Cider ! As I'm sure ye all are!

I don't have a full set, but from memory and in no particular order and sort of a rehash of what I sent to the Bauhaus message board earlier http://www.bauhausmusik.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1
and just to iegoth http://groups.yahoo.com/group/iegoth/ and to Thumped. I'm covering all bases! :0)

    Burning From The Inside
    In The Flat Field
    Spirit
    Stigmata Martyr
    Double Dare
    Hollow Hills
    Swing The Heartache
    Terror Couple Kill Colonel
    She's in Parties
    The Passion of Lovers
    Silent Hedges
    Kick in the eye
    Ziggy Stardust
    Dark Entries
    All We Ever Wanted
    Transmission - For Manchester
    Severance - because we're Irish!
    Telegram Sam
    St Vitrus Dance
    Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores
    Bela

    3 Encores.

My memory getting fuzzy now.. someone else will have to fill in the blanks and sort it out into a proper order.

Bela was last. Telegram Sam ended in encore 2 and restarted in encore 3.
Transmission and Severance were in the encores.

We got extra songs compared to the States - All We Ever Wanted, Severance, Transmission/St Vitrus Dance.
But Slice Of Life was dropped. And we got a 3rd encore - the States didn't get that.

Set was just as in mins under 2 hrs. Lights went out 9pm, warm up music started. They went on at 9.05 and went off finally at 11.02/03 ish.. but it could easily have been the 2 hrs.

Peter said during the show that they have never played here and he's honoured because he is a Murphy. His dad is Irish..
Hey I'm a Murphy too and I've an uncle Peter - just not the same one though!!

Thought the sound was a bit dodge in places but it was grand over all. Seems that Peter was back on form and better than in the States.

I'm privileged to have seen them now 3 times. But jealous to the one's going to the UK one's.. aghrr!

    Orla

P.S the club was jammers last night, so sorry if any of ye were disappoined and couldn't get in.
I've the playlist to type up.. agh feck it - tomorrow!
But do pop in to Dominion http://dominion.gothic.ie at some stage and say hello. I'll be the blonde woman at the decks!

I thought it was a great concert too. I wish I hadn't come early - I had a sore back and feet from walking around Dublin without much rest and it made it hard to get into the concert at first.

I would have liked to hear Sanity Assassin, and Double Dare(I don't remember them playing it at all).

    Transmission - For Manchester
    Severance - because we're Irish!
    Telegram Sam
    St Vitrus Dance

I think Severance came before Transmission. Transmission became St Vitus Dance became Transmission, and I think Telelgram Sam came after that.

    Confused? So Am I.

I was surprised at hearing Severance, they did a good job of it, but more impressed with Transmission. I was willing myself back in time and imagining Hook thumping the bass and Ian howling away.

Anyhow, a night if indulging myself in memories, and some night!

Pooh of the Bauhaus message Board put up a few pics of the people off that, including me..
But he got a pic of the setlist..
    http://www.bauhausmusik.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=639

    So there ya are.
    Double Dare not in..

I'm confused as I thought it was morphed into something else and like I said there or it's my old age catching up on me!

They played Severance in London in '98.

On it for those that are interested are the set lists of all the '98 gigs :
    http://www.bauhausmusik.com/tourdates/old_tourdates/restour.html
    The one's I saw were Nov 7 & 8, Brixton Academy.

I was really surprised at Transmission and delighted. I think that got the crowd more than anything due to the complete surprise - I don't think (but could be wrong and will stand corrected if so) that they never played it before..

Is it me or does the start of Telegram Sam sound kind of like United States of Whatever played live? Probably just me.

Amazing gig. Always been one of my favourite groups, never got to
    see them live before...

Band were tighter than I expected, Murphy's stage presence is still
something special, Hollow Hills was spine-tingling, She's in Parties was
greater than I've ever heard, maybe a pitty it came so 'early' in the gig...

Couldn't make the after-party in Dominion, had to work this morning :(

    What and where is Dominion?
Anyway, Hollow hills was amazing, my favourite tune by far. And Bela lugosi was a perfect end. Damn, I was so suprised at how good they were live, I thought that with all the effects on guitars and drums that it would sound messy but no, it was perfect.
