Advice: Photo Scanning Service

    Hi All,
not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes:

I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm thinking of offering a Photo Scanning Service in my area, I have, IMO a good bit experince scanning my own familes photos (over 3000 images to date) using the HP 5500 (it has an automatic photo feeder suitable for 6x4" photos).

What I hope to do is take people's cherished memories or rare old family pics and back them up onto cd. Then if anything happens they have a digital copy or they can use the cd to print off copies etc.

What I was wondering though is what to charge? To scan 30 6x4" photos only takes 5min but to scan old photos that are different shapes, sizes and condition can take up to 5min per/photo.

What would you suggest as a charge?

I think most services of this type would scan the negatives, if the client still had them. You can get scanners which only do negatives and slides.

Not sure how much you should charge but its something I'm going to be looking into over the next couple of months as our DVD recorder can show jpegs stored on its hard disk. On Christmas night a large group of us enjoyed looking at photos this way as it was much more convenient than passing around hardcopy versions

I'm looking to do this for the non-techie (that's most ppl) and they usually don't keep the negs. Also some of the photos are gonna be 30+ years old so I don't think negatives are gonna be an issue. We're talking scanning for the ordinary joe who may/not have a pc but more than likely it'll be old or they won't have the money or inclination to buy a scanner.

Looking back at our photos, we seem to have the negatives kept in the same envelope that the developer gave us the photos in. I would have thought most people would have kept these negatives in case they either wanted to get more or larger copies developed. The reason why I'm specifically looking to have scans made from the negatives is because they are in better condition than the developed photos i.e. less exposed to dirt, smudges and sunlight. When I mentioned the scanner in my previous post I wasn't suggesting that people would buy such a device, just that someone providing this sort of service would have this option available to them.
