On my new phone with Vodafone, already in my contact book is a number called "Free Texts" and then the number 50234...

    What's that all about?

Looking at comregs website Number checker.

That number is registered to vodafone (as the service provider) and its status is allocated.

And from comregs document National Numbering Conventions
"Network operators shall not charge originating callers for sending text messages (including EMS or MMS) to mobile 50XXX numbers, regardless of which network perators or service providers are involved in the calls;"

Beyond that I have no idea as to what they intend to do with it.

Details of what it does is at:
    http://www.vodafone.ie/services/messaging/howareyou/index.jsp?point=mess

It sends a free "how are you?" message to any Irish mobile

Haha. Since you are online why not setup an a/c on vodafone.ie - New User.

You can send 300 free texts per month from the website (on a PC, not yer phone).
