It's the love story. FFVIII was more a commercial product for square. It's aims were to make FF hugely popular after the surprising popularity of FFVII in the west by making the cutscenes more action packed and also to entice in more female players who flocked to FFVII. At the time Titanic was released and doing really well so the best way was to add an incredibly cheesy love story. It's unfortunate that the story and characters suffered. The love story itself was dreadful as well, a huge step back from the believable love stories of FF3-FF7 (especially FF4 which shock horror had a love story involving a relationship that was already established before the game began). I think FF8 is one of hironobu sakaguchis worst according to him. He was kind of forced to make it. It's just like titanic (decent but the love story is thrash) and pearl harbour pure muck). Girls like them despite anyone with sense seeing how exploitative (sp) they are.
