-check speakers are on and turned up
-control panel/sound and audio devices/ and under the audio tab make sure mute is not checked.
    - if you are using an IBM laptop make sure the volume buttons on the keyboard are turned up.
-are u using onboard sound or a sound card?
-take and and replace the cables making sure that the cables are in the color coded holes.

OK it may be hardware related then.

Can you try to re-install the sound drivers? If you go to the Compaq website you should find the latest drivers for it.

Let me know how you get on.
