Just got a classic email (spam) from a guy called The Callaghan Ignorance.

Hello. I am a 16 year old student from New Jersey and I am currently doing a school project on credit card number frequency. Basically the purpose of the experiment is to investigate numerical patterns and trends in standard Visa and Mastercard numbers. I am also doing a separate sideline examination of expiry dates. All I request from you is that you forward me your credit card number and expiry date. Please be assured that this will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used for research purposes. In return I will email or post you a copy of my findings. Should you want a hard copy please include your postal address in your response. Kind regards, Richard Callaghan

Probably a Romanian, the grammar is too "together" to be Nigerian etc.

It's known as a "phishing" scam, and a pretty amateur attempt.

Can you post his I.P.? or preferably pm me the whole mail, with bodies. I'll tell you exactly where it came from.

Thats a valid Mastercard number. (Although not attached to an account of course). It should keep him happy for a few min.

With respect, are you going to send him your CC details then?

I've deleted it after I responded to him - it went into my junk mail which is immediately emptied.

I got a wallet for Christmas which had a cardboard AMEX card in it to keep the pockets straight. I emailed him back this number so if he responds I can get the details from it.

Send him some old people porn or pictures of michael jackson, that'll show him!!

OK, in that case you're safe as houses. I fail to see what merit this research would have anyway. If he could verify his credentials to a card company, I'm sure they could provide him with enough statistical info.

If it smells like a turd it probably is.

Realise that African English is as different to Hiberno-English as is American-English.

Just gave him that cardboard number and wished him all the best with the project.

    I'm well aware of that. Nigerian pidgin is invariably a mixture of igbo and bastardised "english", at least when they are not pushing out the mass mailed scripts that most people would be familiar with. Spoken west african pidgin as not too difficult to understand, but the same communication in written form is almost unintelligible to me, an example;

" Why your body dey shake like leaf now, abeg thermocool! "

(I.e.-please relax- more literally, go jump in a pool...)

More specificly African-English (especially in written form) tends to be a lot more formal than what we would use. It not just Nigerians, but many central and west Africans, even those of European descent / mother tongue.

Interesting. My knowledge of African culture and language is severely lacking outside the fraud hotspots of Ghana/Ivory Coast/Nigeria.

It's a bit ironic that an interest in e-scamming, the worst facet of these areas, has given me insights into the culture and way of life that I never would have known before.

Someone robbed someone's credit card details or something once, and bet on a horse with it, and won
but they were found out, and the owner of the card got to keep the winnings :D
