Importing from USA - How Do I Calculate the VAT/Duty etc?

I'm thinking of importing a Sigma EF-500 flashgun from B&H. The total including shipping to Ireland is $171 which is roughly €144. The cheapest I can find it for on this side of the pond is €246 from Technikdirekt in Germany. Does anyone know how to calculate the additional charges for importing from the USA?

    Many thanks,

    Carrigman

I think (And emphasise "think") that you get charged the vat rate relative to the items cost in Ireland. So an item with a retail cost over here of €100 would have a VAT charge of €21!

If it's marked as a gift you might either get away with it opr get off lightly! I bought a camera from ebay that shipped from Hong Kong which had an irish retail price of about €650. I claimed the birthday present angle and said I didn't have a receipt and the charged me the VAT on €200!

All of this said I could be completely wrong! If I am I apologise!

€144 - does this include insurance?

    Typicly:

(€144 + import duty) * 1.21 + shippers handling charge (for collecting duty + VAT)

You n need to work out the rate of duty from www.revenue.ie. The tariff codes are 9006.10-9006.59 for cameras.

from what i've bought from b&h

    €144 including postage

    + duty @ approx 6%
    = €9

    + 21% VAT on everything (€153)
    = €32

    so total would be 144 + 9 + 32 = €185

let us know if that's about right

(also, it's approx €205 on amazon.co.uk including postage)

Many thanks to all who replied. Looks as if I can import it for less than €200 which is a significant saving over the European prices. By the way DotOrg, the Amazon UK price for the "Super" version of the flashgun is £187 plus postage. The one you were looking at is the non-Super version.

    Thanks again guys.

Beware too that the courier is likely to charge you an additional charge on delivery for processing the duty etc. Just be aware that may be an additional charge when budgeting. UPS overcharged me on a B+H delivery so I'd advise everyone to examine all figures too to make sure they are not being overcharged.
