    Hi,

I'm currently running Windows XP but would like to explore using linux too. After reading up a little, I'm going to try a dual boot XP and Mandriva 2006.

I've defragged my harddrive and, upon booting from the Mandriva installation cd, attempt to partition the harddrive. However, I get an error saying that the Windows NTFS partition could not be resized, and that there was an error counting clusters.

    Any ideas?

Mandriva might not have proper NTFS support. NTFS has been pretty much unsupported in linux until recently, there's some information about linux NTFS support here. Its more likely however that Mandriva have some sort of basic NTFS support which ****ed up when it came across your configuration.

However to save you alot of pain, I'd recommend you partition your NTFS drive in windows or at boot with Partition Magic or whatever partitioning software you use.
Linux would ideally like 3 or 4 partitions, however just leaving a nice big block free should be enough for any linux installer to work with.

Also Id sugguest you use a real distro ;), if you just want to try linux to see what its like, download a live bootable cd, like knoppix
and if you like it install a real operating system like gentoo or ubuntu :)
