bought a new laptop, 256mb ram, got a game as a pressie,quake 4,that needs 512mb ram according to the specs, is it worth trying it or will it not work at all/be alot slower?

What are the specs of the laptop?
Quake 4 is not an easy game to run.
That all aside, you should have a minimum of 512mb ram anyway - www.shop4memory.com will sell extra ram for your laptop.
