    Use two discs perhaps?
Make a .rar archive with win rar, and you set files to be at most 500mb in size. That way it'll make two files. Check it out, you can do it with Winrar

What type of files are they? Some types of files are already nearly as small as they will be after being zipped. Some can be greatly reduced. Have you tried putting them all into a zip file?

It depends on what type of stuff you want to put on the CD.

Some things, like Midi instrumentals, some bitmaps, Word/Office documents, text files, will compress heavily and could easily go under 700MB.

Wave sounds, Mp3s, executables (depends not always), Jpegs, gifs and png images (already compressed) won't compress well.

I don't know if you're using Windows NT/2000/XP but if you're using this and your hard drive is NTFS formatted, you can compress the stuff directly on the hard drive to test it out - select the items, right click them, click on "Proprties" and under attributes, there will either be a compression checkbox, or an advanced options button which will lead you to same.

This is quick and gives you a fair idea how compressable your stuff is, but you could get more by Zipping or RARing it.

4+gb .... (even 8+gb) on a dvd sure sounds attractive for movie storage .....

    what would a burner cost? .... 70 to 140 euro's?

a dual layer drive with lightscribe are cheap as dirt on komplett.ie

20 quid extra on top of the price of a cd burner...well worth it!

Spanning is what i outlined above for win rar. AFAIK you can do it with win zip, but who the hell uses that any more?

    u can make it in to 1 file,,then u can use a filesplitter prog or winzip,to split,it in two,on 2 cds, see download.com.

If it's .avi then use something like these to split into two files you can use straight off, no unzipping:

    http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tag=srch&qt=avi+splitter&tg=dl-20&search.x=0&search.y=0&search=+Go%21

Only trial versions but it'd do the job for now.
