How old is too old?

My wife and I are American citizens. Any day now, my wife should be receiving her Irish citizenship. I’ve gone back a number of months on this forum and noticed the plights of computer grad students. The catch-22 of needing experience but how can I get experience if no one will hire me. Well, I’m just the opposite, experience but maybe too old? I’m fifty-four. I noticed a large percentage of IT personnel are members of this forum. That’s why I’m posing this question to the members of this forum. I would love very much to accompany my wife to your beautiful country and hopefully obtain employment in the IT industry. My qualifications are such that I have a blend of old and new technology. I obtained a master’s degree in computers in 1997. Briefly, I have COBOL, DB2, JCL and CICS (a little rusty) mainframe experience. Currently, I have a DBA type role where I occasionally do creates, grants, loads, unloads, and restores via imagecopy. Mainly, I now support a number of MS Access apps I’ve built using VBA, several integrating Excel and Word VBA code. Lastly, I have written a couple of VB6 apps. I have never contracted before; I prefer the security of a permanent job. What, if any, employment opportunities might exist for me? Thank you.

There seems to be some VBA/VB Access/SQL jobs out there. As to what rates you'll get I have no idea. As a contractor age shouldn't come into it. Your usually treated as the hired help and once you do what you say you can do, no one really cares. Only problem is dealing with the agencies, in general they are very unprofessional to deal with. The market seems to be picking up, and in my opinion they value experience and maturity over paper qualifications.
