    Pope Sidius was on the telly recently in a [santa claus-ish] red and white hat... I think the hat had something to do with Christmas, but not directly related to Santa (can't exactly remember what they said about it).

    That have anything to do with Santa's look? Anyone here know what the story is with the Popes hat?

    ...and the only time I remember seeing or hearing anything about a blue Santa was in Pepsi's Christmas ad campaign a few years ago. I took it that Coke wouldn't let them use the red version (which is registerd trademark of coca-cola iirc).

    //edit
    it seems the red-and-white santa was not invented by coca-cola.

    Impossible, Santas image is everywhere and I doubht everyone pays royalties to coke.

    As I recall, Pepsi simply tried to cop they idea, but it never caught on.

    Yea, I'm sure you're right. But have a look at the small print of any Santa related Coca-Cola stuff.. I'm pretty sure there's something there to the effect of "santa is a registered trademark".

    I think santa originally wore natural colours and stuff...like animal skins, brown and green clothes.Then some clever artist for coke decided to put him in red and white..(they're the "coke" colours) and the image just took hold and everyone bought into it.

    Don't forget Snopes ;)
    The Santa Claus figure, although not yet standardized, was ubiquitous by the late 19th century. Santa was portrayed as both large and small; he was usually round but sometimes of normal or slight build; and he dressed in furs (like Belsnickle) or cloth suits of red, blue, green, or purple
    At the beginning of the 1930s, the burgeoning Coca-Cola company was still looking for ways to increase sales of their product during winter, then a slow time of year for the soft drink market. They turned to a talented commercial illustrator named Haddon Sundblom, who created a series of memorable drawings that associated the figure of a larger than life, red-and-white garbed Santa Claus with Coca-Cola.
