anyone got any ideas on where to start...
im not too sure what to do as this would be my first graphics card.

    768ram
    xp2200
    os
    xp pro

im installing the directx december runtime to see where that gets me but any help is appreciated.

    Congrats on the new card!

Maybe someone else will know it better, but I'm not sure what "settings" you're talking about... are they in the display properties?

Can you take a screen shot of the window with the slider?

And did you just install the driver that came with the card, or did you download the latest drivers?

    ive downloaded the lastet drivers,
both omega and forceware to try.
    neither worked -
    omegas were a lot worse.

thats the slider im talking about,
thats a screen of the ati page on the laptop but its the same idea.

    cheers

Did you fully uninstall the old ATi drivers before installing the new geforce?
And maybe reinstall DirectX after changing cards?
Does it work perfectly in openGL games at full speed? If not it might be some kind of hardware fault or cooling issue?

I think that's all I have left to suggest, I'd be guessing from here on and it would be a waste of your time.

    guessing is fine :0
    im lost.

the ati card didnt need drivers......
i dont have any games to test,
i just bought the card for tv out and dvds :/

You have a Nvidia Geforce card installed and are using ATI drivers.
    Remove the ATI control center.

yeah did you uninstall your previouse graphics gpu drivers?

    thanks for the posts guys,
but the ancient ati i had installed ran fine in xp without drivers.

there is no ati control centre or other ati apps on my pc

I'm 100% sure that SmartGART is an ATI feature which would suggest the ATI omega drivers are still installed on the machine.
Yeap, XP would have windows drivers for the Rage128 (I had one) :)

So, re-run the Omega driver setup and uninstall them. (Or from Add/Remove Programs)
Reboot and install the nvidia drivers.

thats a screenshot from my laptop to show balfa the screen i was talking about.
the 5200 is in the pc.

ive updated directx to the latest version and ive used a program called driver cleaner to remove every trace of nvidia and ati off the pc.
[there were 2 ati inf files and 4 registry entries]

rebooted and reinstalled the nvidia drivers - no joy.
i can watch divx files if i disable directx rendering but the pc hangs if its enabled.

    Ah right so.
Try rebooting into Safe Mode (F8 on boot) and moving the slider to max and rebooting.

tbh it sounds like an overlay issue your having. (driver related)

How much did you pay for it? If it was more than €50 i'd have to say you got ripped off. Its just i nearly got ripped off a fair few years ago with Compustore selling me a top-of-the-range PCI card for €200, but in actual fact drivers for it had stopped being produced two or three years before i bought the card...

    trying safe mode now,
what do you suggest to fix the overlay issue
    [if this doesnt work?]

bought it on boards for 30eu...

    i knew what i was buying ...

moved the settings to max in safe mode,
video played, but awful, as to expected.

    back to xp,
    slider up,
    pc hung

So once you applied the settings in safe mode and rebooted the slider moved down again on it's own?

I have a 5600 in my laptop. What I have to do to use the latest Nvidia drivers is to install them as usual and reboot. Windows reports that a new card is found but doesn't install it automatically. I have to selet the inf manually and force the driver to install.
What is your card listed as in Device Manager?
Under the driver tab does it show a Nvidia driver installed?
    What version?

i moved it up to test and it hung as soon as i tried a video

installing an older version right now,
    ill check when it completes

Might be an idea to install chipset drivers for your motherboard.
Your old Rage would have been a 2x AGP card and the Geforce would be a 4x AGP card.
For example, I have to install my VIA chipset drivers first or my Radeon won't install right.
Just another idea to check out. ;)

    yep,
that was one of the first things i tried.
    :/
    old drivers wouldnt install.

going through a list of the from guru3d.com

    cheers for the help.

    meant to say,
agp is running at 4x in the bios

installed driver version is 4.4.1.0 [the old one im testing with]

i have also uninstalled and reinstalled the latest chipset drivers to no affect
