Xmas Eve traffic?

Hi, I was planning on a quick visit to Galway from Meath on Christmas Eve. I'd be leaving at about 7am and hope to get to Gort by 9:30 - this is the time it usually takes me at night when traffic is light.

Does anyone know if traffic would tend to be light/heavy at this time?

I'll probably leave Galway again at 6pm hoping for the same journey time home, but I'm not sure if the N6 will be chocablock or not. (I usually use back roads and join the N4 at Clonard). Has anyone been on it at this time on Xmas eve before? I was hoping for a quick journey so as I can stay in Galway for most of the day and also get home to my family on time for drinks!

    Any advice welcome.

Certainly in years gone by when Christmas Eve fell on a weekday, I would say the traffic in general radiating out of Dublin/Leinster would have been heavy in the evening. But now that it's on Saturday I'd guess that many people will travel home early on in the day to get all of Christmas Eve in with their families.

7am though....I seriously doubt it'll be any worse than a normal Saturday morning, i.e. dead.

That place is insane. It is always jammed. Me and the GF thought we would be smart last christmas and go at 0200Hrs to avoid the rush. The place was packed. People were parking the the trolly bays. All the tills were open and the queues were halfway down the aisles.

On the subject of travelling over Christmas, we are driving to Coleraine (Co. Derry) on Christmas day after the kids open the pressies. I am expecting it to be pretty quiet.

You obviously weren't near Blanch at around 6pm yesterday then. Took me about 40 minutes to get from the N3 to Roselawn!

Ironically there was a Garda directing traffic - but down outside the station (where she's been the last several weeks) which was no help of course. :(

I'll bump this over to Commuting/Transport, for its worth I think the traffic this year has'nt been nearly as bad a recent Xmas' could have something to do with it falling on Sunday.

    Mike.
