I've got a problem with my DVD/CD-ROM. It won't work basically. When I put a CD in the light comes on at the front and there's a clicking noise. It sounds like the cd is trying to load but can't. After about 30 seconds it stops. It was working perfectly a couple of days ago. Any ideas? Could it be dirt?

Obviously, try a few CDs to being with.
Check whether they're visible in My Computer (i.e. You can Explore)
If not: try booting from a bootable CD (Such as the OS CD..)

Ok I tried a couple of DVDs and they worked. I had only tried games and audio CDs. I couldn't find my XP CD but I tried an old Windows 95 CD and it didn't run or show up on My Computer. Basically only DVDs are showing up on My Computer.

OK - just to be 100% clear on this: you tried to turn the computer on..with the Windows 95 disc in...right?

If that failed: go into your BIOS (Del, or F1, or F2 will usually get you in -look on screen for instructions)
And check the Boot order is set: CD first..
    Then try again.
If this fails again (And you're sure the Windows 95 disc isn't damaged) then the lazer is most likely goosed (i.e. It's a hardware fault)

Windows 95 cd is not bootable.
I had a drive like this before. It was just borked.

I gotta go out now but I'll have a look for my XP CD when I get home later on. Is that bootable? Why would it play DVDs and not anything else? If it was broken would it not just play nothing?

    You'd think that wouldn't ye :)
As I said I had the same problem with a drive a while ago. Don't know if it's a lens thing or what.
Do a google search for Hiren's boot cd 7.5 if your stuck for a bootable cd. About 50Mb
