    Hi am a 16 year old who has done the junior cert 2 years ago and i am looking for a job as an apprentice mechanic in waterford if anyone has anything please pm me iv been looking for a long time.

    You should consider auto electrics, most modern cars are all electrics. Its the way to go in my opinion, you'll make loads more money at it than mechanics.

    i think id rather mechanics.people are always going to need mechanics and im sure u can do eletrics in motor mechanics(i dono tho)i dont really mind about money as long as im fixing cars and getting something decent im happy as larry as they say.;)

    Yeah best chance is to sign up with fas, and go to every garage in your area which will probally be bolands he seems to have everything in waterford.

    Chances are if you walk into a garage they'll tell you to walk right out again because without experience your a liability to them..

    As I said, do a FÁs course for a year, you'll have fun, learn lots and most importantly you'll have paper to prove your qualification

    do your leaving cert once uve that done there is plenty of places you can apply for a course to teach ya .

    leaving cert not an option.ya bolands does have every thing hes got it sowen up.i thought u had to have an apprentice to do a fas training course ill look into it.thanks everyone

    Go into a garage and ask them to give you a trial.Say 2 months.This will alow them to get a feel for you and you to get a fell for the job.

    unless you have as much electronics as Hammer and vicegrips knowledge, you'll be unemployable in 10 years.

    While most any main garage can teach teh Hammer end of things, most of them are ony at Battery, switch, lamp level on electrics and know very little abot the other stuff.

    Therefore, figure out for yourself, how you can learn all the other stuff that you will need in the future and go there, forget the Hammer and Vicegrips end as the be all and end all of the trade. Hybrids are becoming very popular and even more complicated than your average 4 cycle.

    Your local Regional Tech may be a good place to look.

    This is good advice. Most cars since the 90s are heavy on electronics. The "fun" side of car tuning is all about electronics now. It isn't that difficult to pick up at a practical level, particularly through the likes of FAS. A diploma course wouldn't hurt, but that does generally require a leaving cert.

    If you're hell bent on the mechanical end of things, perhaps you'd be better off starting with someone working on classics. Smaller market, but more interesting stuff and there's definitely demand there.

    my father thinks he can get me in with a diesel mechanic all agricultureal machines he says they get way better traning and stuff like that althought i dont like the idea of working with big machinery ill give it a go tho.:v:

    I would steer clear of manual work here. I know you love cars but you gotta live. I love cars it's my hobby but i don't work on them for a living. it's just for fun. become an automotive engineer if you can, I'm afraid our foreign friends are gonna be doing all the manual work here soon. We will soon be like the states. Not that there's anything wrong with that !

    i started serving my time as a mechanic in 1974 so i have considerable experience in the motor trade. as others here have already stated the spanner end of things is the worst side of the job. the wage rates are crap compared to all the other trades out there. the way the garages look at it is that their mechanics will make up the shortage in wages at night and the weekend doing nixers and so pay them very badly. one main dealer i worked even refused to sell us parts unless they were for our own cars ! the electronic end of the game is a different scenario as the guys doing this work are regarded as technicians and can command higher wage rates.

    its a strange thing but people have no trouble paying other tradesmen much higher rates but when it comes to their car in which they transport the family they will haggle and try to do everything on the cheap !

    Given I was not too far off the mark, I'd say, continue your education (on a technical level where possible) to Leaving Cert and follow a Technical Level thereafter. Sheet, if you joined the Air-force as an aircraft mechanic, you'd get a training far ahead of any car mechanic and get paid something while learning.

    Meanwhile, "if 01 out of 10 people don't understand binary", means nothing to you, keep learning until it does.

    Try every garage you can get to, tell everyone you know what you are looking for. Since the most successful way of getting a job is through personal contracts, not cold calling or any other method.
