Why should membership of the SU be compulsory?

I'm sick of these SU hacks telling me what we, as students, should be doing. I tried to unsubscribe from their cringe-worthy emails going on and on about all these things that are so 'important'.

The SU should be under the CSC if anything - I don't see why I shold have to pay for 4 hacks on salaries when most people don't even know who they are, don't even vote and wouldn't even consider asking them for 'advice'.

I'm quite happy with my university life as it is thank you very much. It is a public institution dominated by academics and professional administrators. There is scope for a representative channel from students (i.e. via ex-officio membership of the Board) and I really wish they'd just concentrate on that instead of all this noise about condoms, gay week, 'protests', blah, blah, blah. If I was so concerned about any of these things, I'd join the relevant society, indeed start my own.
