    Howdy folks,

I have just checked there to see if a domain is
registered and it is unfortunatly (call it xdesign.com).

So myself and a friend thought up this business
name but are a little unhappy that the site is
taken. If we were to register this business 'xdesign'
would it be possible to somehow get the .com?

The .ie is available but were both students and
dont really have the extra cash.
There actually is no website at the domain, it is
just a pointer over to their website which sounds
    similar (so x-media.com).

    Many thanks in advance :)

Come up with a better domain name. Getting the name right is a very important part of any business and xdesign is somewhat generic and it does not stand out. Try combining phonemes from your own name and your friends name to get a unique, memorable name.

Domains with a single character at the start and a dictionary word tend to be already registered. (I know because I have the full lists of com/net/org/biz/info domains because of the work I do.)

The .com has been registered since 1997 and it probably would be expensive to buy. You would have to contact the registrant to see if they were interested in selling though.

Come up with something brandable, unique and registrable. And check www.archive.org to see if it was ever registered or if it ever had a website - just in case the domain name you invented had previously been a porn site or something.

On the .ie side of things, the prices will fall in January to around the 30 Euros (+VAT) mark as IEDR has announced that it is cutting its prices for .ie - more than one hoster here has announced a special offer for .ie domains. Perhaps xdesign.ie would be the way to go but I'd ignore xdesign as a domain name - it is too dot.bomb. Most of the big design agencies seem to have mad names or, if they are more powerful, the names of their founders.

    Regards...jmcc

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I didnt specify but xdesign
isnt actually the name... I was just taking that as an
example as not to give away the name.

Possibly the .ie will be the way to go as I really like the
    name of the company :).

The wholesale price of IE domains has just been cut by 20%, so you should find better offers now. Blacknight's doing them for €30 atm as a special offer. The stupid bastard. (No offense like.)

Sweet. I'll be picking up a few more names then ;-)

KJT, Sedo.com have a domain brokerage service that I recommend. They will
acquire the name for you at the lowest price they can. They are very
    professional.

    http://www.sedo.com/broker/index.php4?tracked=&partnerid=&language=us

If you are serious about the name you want, they will try and acquire it for
    you.

Or... you could try another extension like .info or .biz, or .bz. There are
hundreds of extensions you can choose from. You might be interested in the
offer running at the moment for free .be (the extension for Belgium) domain
    names.

Of coarse, if non of that suits you. You can always get a .ie from BlackNight
    for a cool €30.

Just be careful to read the small print.
We've had a lot of clients come to us who couldn't move their domains away from a provider or were being charged up to €100 to have their domain released

€100 to transfer a name! Yes. Thats a good point. You should always read the
fine print. I know though that RegisterFly and DomainSite are brilliant registrars..
    as is BlackNight.

EDIT: Nevermind, I thought this was that host that had the suspect testimonial here a while back. Carry on, nothing to see here.
