NTL billing - so annoying

I have NTL digital and a few weeks ago I got a call from an NTL rep offering me Film 4 free for a 1 month trial. I said yes, it was switched on and everything was ok.

However, 2 weeks later I received my two monthly bill and found that I was being charged for it. I rang them and they said that when the bill was being calculated it was assumed that I would be keeping Film 4 for the next 2 months (bills calculated in advance).

They accepted that I didn't owe the money but said that I would have to pay the extra anyway and would be credited back next month. I have enough trouble paying money that I actually owe without having to pay money that I don't owe and so I just paid the normal €59 that I did owe.

I then received a reminder notice that I may be disconnected if I didn't pay the balance of €12, money that NTL accept that I don't owe. I rang them again and was just told that I would have to pay the balance or risk disconnection, despite them admitting that the billing amount was a mistake.

I actually had the same problem about 2 years ago when I was mistakenly billed twice for the same period (I check my bill ever since). They admitted that they had made a mistake but said that I would have to pay the incorrectly billed amount or risk disconnection. The overpaid amount would be credited to me on the next bill.

I have never come accross another company that does this. Anyone else (even Eircom) would apologise and send another corrected bill. NTL's billing/credit department seems to be up their ar*e. I would get Sky but I live in an apartment and the mgt. company won't allow dishes.

My advise is to check every bill.

Anyone else ever had any problems with NTL billing?

Take the name of everyone you speak to, record the date, time and details of the conversation.

Write a registered letter to them demanding that it be removed from your bill and if they won't then you will be taking them to the small claims court.

If they don't then take them to the small claims court, it won't cost you anything and you will probably win by default when they won't even show up.

While I'm not a lawyer, this sort of thing breaks more then one Irish law, including the consumer information act and probably other laws to do with baiting costumers.

BTW this probably won't need to go any further then the registered letter, they are only bluffing.

Don't let them get away with this, it is disgraceful, much worse then I thought. They tried to get me to sign up for this also, I told them where they could stuff it. I knew that there would be something dodgy about it.
