homebrew and a possible way to burn UMD(untested)

Attempting this will most likely void your PSP warranty.

If you attempt this, avoid telling people, because doing so would be extremely stupid. The idea is ignorant of the working of the UMD and MD formats, which are not compatible. - mod edit, do not delete this unless you delete the whole post!!!

ok firstly i dunno if the UMd burning part is allowed but its just a theory so tell me if it aint and ill edit ok the homebrew thing in my title is about something sony could do is let homebrew developers email the app to sony and sony would sign it depending on wether it was legal or not ie emulators then email them back a signed PBP file and this way the homebrew war would be won in both favours except the emulator side

    now UMD burning

Disclaimer:before i start i wanna say the usually if you mess up your psp in any way its not my fault or the fault of boards.ie its yours for trying it in the first place

i dunno has this been tested or no but its just something that would work in theory.
what you need:a way to burn minidisc
your demo dis or any umd for that matter
ok when you look at a minidisc and a umd beside each other the disk inside look the same and also the same when you open the white casing of a UMD from the side and same with minidisc.
so youve opened them up now put the minidisc inside the UMD and put it in your psp of course you would have had to have it burned already but i dunno a thing about that part because the only way i ever burned minidisc was with software that did music only through the MD player
also the mechanism of the drives of psp and MD players look the same so maybe you would be able to put a MD straight into the psp
but as i said ive tried none of this so ive no idea but its just a theory that might but probably wont work

That wouldn't work. Just because they LOOK the same doesn't mean they are. CDs look extremely similar to DVDs but as you(hopefully) know, they are quite different. Sony are the only ones who can burn UMDs, even game publishers submit new titles on DVD. Why would they leave such an easy way around their security.

just a thought anyway since MD was developed by sony too but i think my solution to homebrew would be great

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭4Xcut

i'm not disputing the fact that it would be great. but sony wouldn't let it be freely distributed, thus it is no longer homebrew. our best hope is not upgrading past 1.5 atm. thankfully there is a loader out for 2.0 and there will be a fix to play 2.0+ games on 1.5

    lolz
but seriously, I dont think you can burn data on MD anyway.
and UMD is a completley different format using different layers.
Its like cd and dvd but in this cause more like cassette and vinyl

Sorry weeder if I sound harsh here but you should delete or edit your original post. It's total rubbish. It's just something you plucked from the top of your imagination and decided to share with us. Now the thing is, some kid may see that and try to rip apart his md's and umd's for nothing. Maybe you should've asked a question or maybe googled a bit for research purposes but to just write a load of s**** about something you obviously have no clue about or evidence to back it up is, imo, very irresponsible. Very, very silly thread which may indeed spark a debate but shouldn't be posted in the 1st place. /rant over

UMD - Universal Media Disc - consists of newer layer technology, which can basically compared to a standard DVD. When you have an UMD in your hands, you basically see a cut-down-in-size-DVD - about 1.8 Gigs of data fit on such a disc.

A MiniDisk was originally designed to store MP3's and music only, and does not have the same composition as a UMD, and doesn't take as much data on it.

So therefore, a game probably won't fit on a UMD, so there's no point in trying that.

Besides PSP 2.0 does not allow homebrew games, as well as 2.5 and 2.6. Only 1.5 allowed this, however, I have heard that newer PSPs in stores now already have 2.0, which is downgradable though. 2.5 and 2.6 are not.

    Information:

    UMD

    MiniDisc
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minidisc

    //EDIT:

One more thing..... a MiniDisc does not fit into the PSP anyway.

thats why its an in theory thing the same as aDVD player could read cds and as i said in the end probvably wont work but odds are if the homebrew world made a deal with sony to get there stuff signed and still stay GNUor whatever opensource licence there using sony and homebrew world would be very happy

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭4Xcut

v2.0 does allow homebrew games such as emulators, pspong, squarez, etc. It just doesn't have kernel access so iso loaders don't work as well as a small no of games. any user mode eboots work thanks to fanjita's loader.

all the homebrew id be using is ewmulatorsa but like im talking about for the 2.6 and that not everyone can affgord lcs heh i mean like sony would probably sell more units too ive got a 2.0 psp

There's a reason for why empty UMD's are not commercially available, as well as the writers for it.

It's just a theory, yes, but it's not the same as a DVD player being able to play CDs.

The technology is just completely different - the firmware in the machine just wouldn't know what to do with a MiniDisc, even though technically it COULD read it.

And the GPL (General Public License - that's what you probably meant) only applies to software, not to hardware licenses, or illegally burned games.

And Sony wouldn't be too happy to know that homebrews actually work on the PSP - that's why they made the whole thing proprietary ;)

I have an idea that will defo work. Burn the UMD to a DVD and cut that mofo up. Then plop it into a UMD case and away we go. You could get San Andreas or Xbox 360 games working on the PSP.

A PSP won't play XBox Games. And it won't play PS2 games. And it will most definitely NOT play XBox 360 games... Why?

It's a handheld console that simply cannot comprehend what's on the disc (if you put it into a UMD case.

The PSP does not understand the format of XBox, XBox 360 or PS2 whatsoever.

Also: PS2 and XBox games mostly come on DVDs - the data on those discs is far more than a normal UMD. A UMD can have up to 1.8 Gigs, while a DVD can have 4.7 Gigs and more. ;)

And I have never seen somebody cutting a DVD to the size of an UMD and put it into a UMD case  :v:

I'm going to buy a load of DS games and put them into the mem stick slot. Can't believe nobody has thought of this except me. I'm off to sell my DS afterwards.

Well, I'm going to make a UMD that'll fit into a dvdrw drive. I've been watching McGuyver reruns so I'll be using a piece of elastic, a pin and a coaster. Then, I'm going to explore that big ol wardrobe that's been in my Grandad's room for years and if I find that Mr.Tumnus....

pls post screenshots of running PS2, XBox, and/or XBox 360 games on the PSP.

pls explain in easy steps how this is possible.

if you do, you probably have revolutionized the PSP and the way of hacking it.

There may be hope for you. not in the form of a downgrader but rather homebrew for v2.01+. using the edison carter cheat device fanjita managed to run the "hello World" program, a simple bianary program. This proved unsigned code could be loaded. Given time there will possiby be an eboot loader available similar to the one used for v2.0

The moderators are drunk! I'm off to create lots of threads about how to get dodgy iso's from dodgier former eastern block websites.
