I am looking to keep the grey matter engaged and came across this. It's a part-time doctorate in education.

It certainly looks interesting. Anyone know anyone doing it? Or have any opinions on it? Or, do you know of any other programmes in a similar vein?

Hmmm... looks interesting all right. I'll ask some people what they think and post back.

does look interesting, and the fees are very affordable.

problem is that; is it really a doctorate? doesn't seem to have the weight of a normal doctorate. it is only 50,000 words thesis. would be a bit worried that it wouldn't carry the full weight of a normal phd - a bit like the DBA. although it would be great from the pov of being the director of a department given the pedagological training.

I reckon it is due to the fact it is a taught doctorate. There are several (six, I think) written assignments - perhaps that accounts for it? What is the norm for a PhD thesis?
    - a bit like the DBA
    What's the DBA?

    Bump.

Interested in getting opinions on this - the thread seems to have got lost over the Christmas.

Continuing my investigations, I have discovered TCD do a practically identical Doctorate - details here.

Nobody seems to know anything about either, though. :(

I found out a bit more info.

    http://www.spd.dcu.ie/main/courses/e_dd.shtml

This one will be advertised in June and start next January. :)

    http://www.tcd.ie/Education/DEd.htm

TCD one has a closing date in the next couple of weeks for a start next academic year. :)

And the Sheffield course in the original link is starting Sept 12 months (must start every 2 years only. :(

Currently very interested in the dcu one but I will have to carry out further enquiries. :)

    As did I.

We had a mini-seminar at work the other day where PhD holders gave us a talk on what was involved in completing such a program. The general feeling was that there was a certain amount snobbery against these types of doctorates, but that this snobbery would reduce in time.

They are apparently a type of professional doctorates, though they are still classed as a ten on the academic scale - equivalent to a PhD. More on wiki.

I notice the one in Drumcondra is more geared to the primary sector, though, that would put me off it. An acquiantance knows someone he works with who is doing one - I will post here when I get talking to him.

Looking forward to your update on that. I think the Trinity one needs 60% for each of the taught modules. You could be stopped from progression to dissertation stage. Also you need a well docummented proposal for research.

I will email dcu over the next couple of days and see if I find out more.
    :)
