i dont know if this is the right forum..
i dont know if its even called trad arab music...
and i have no samples to ask about...

but im hoping someone can help me out...
i have a major soft spot for euphoric music.. and lately anytime im watching
any documentarys on the middle east or ejypt/ iraq etc.. they sometimes have this eery music in the background.. and kinda euphoric reverbing humming with a faint womans whaling voice in the background.. and all in that kinda format.. i have no idea what its called but i really like it and find it really peaceful.. i would love to get a hold of a complamation of this kinda music to chill out to...

anyone know what im on about??

    cheers

Try and find some Sun City Girls stuff. They're hard to find but they take all these Eastern music and record it themselves using western instruments.

Tinariwen are a group from the Middle East that mix traditional Middle Eastern music (the kind you were describing) with blues and it is something to be heard. They mix the traditional instruments with guitars and bass and it sounds really cool (and not westernised that much at all). I keep meaning to get their CDs, I saw them on Jools Holland and they were so intense.

There should really be a world music board....Im actually looking for the names of any popular East African bands. Also Im trying to find out if there are any african bands set up in Ireland cause Im doing a Fundraiser for the people of Darfur in Sudan and would like a traditional African band to play at it.

Some stuff I'd recommend would be "omar faruk tekbilek" or ravi shankar even though he's trad indian music it still has a similar vibe, juno reactor do some eastern stuff in their music, check out a track by theirs called "God is God" and you'll see what I mean, also they have an album called labyrinth which has lots a chanting and some dark ass flamenco guitar on it ( as well as BANGIN electronica ), oh yeah some flamenco stuff ya might like would be stuff from juan martin or paco da lucia all eastern influenced all GOOD ;)

p.s. watch out for arabian pop music its really really awfull

Have you had any luck with this Macker?

Can you name some of the documentaries in question and maybe the music can be sourced using that route.

A few of the suggestions in this thread sound a little wide of the mark; somehow I doubt that a documentary on Egypt/Iraq would use Israeli music, kinda like putting The Dubliners on a documentary on England.. ;-)

believe it or not but a sizeable proportion of local Israeli music has big Arab influences and in some cases the air is indistinguishable. Jewish people who left Arab countries after the occupation in Palestine brought a lot of their Arab influenced music with them for examle Ofra Haza's Im Inalu a Euro Hit in the early 90's was a Yemenite Jew.
