i just got an extension on the side of the house with the attic converted. now me ma is movin the PC's up to there. problem is that the NTL cable connection is down in the kitchen. Is there any way i can get internet in the attic without gettin NTL out to redo the install into the attic?

ps, can anyone remember the name of that site that lets you search all the newsgroups for a particular file?

    thanks.

    Is wireless not an option?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭Repli

Wireless router and wifi cards are the easiest option unless you're good at laying cable..

Is there any speed drops in going wireless?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭Repli

Nope lol, unless you have a broadband connection faster than 108mbps :)

Not really, your bottleneck will be your broadband connection. In the real world expect to achieve around 20mb/sec to your wireless router - but your broadband may only be 2mb/sec.

about a month ago, argos had a special on a Linksys gateway WAG354G with two usb wireless cards for 99 euros. saving of 20 euros from komplett. don't know if they still have the deal though.

would wireless go up to through 2 ceilings and across to the extension? its kinda diagonally up.

depends on the distance and any other things in the way that may interfere, such as cordless phones, microwaves, steel reinforced walls....

id say most 802.11g routers have an effective distance of about 100meters indoors, i can get a low signal on mine right down to the end of my garden, from the router which is in the middle of the house.

I have wifi all over the place - laptop, pda, server, personal computer and family computer, and the speeds vary -- mainly due to whether oddly enough, if its raining I get as low as 2Mbps but unless you have better for an internet connection and are pushing it 24/7 you'll never notice the difference.

Wifi is the way to go, only... make sure you've got it secured as there *are* some 'interesting' folk who like nothing but to walk around looking for open wifi access points

Solarnexus, what kind of range do you get i have a router and i have to literally sit beside it with a PSP or laptop to get a signal. and it is 802.11g its caynon, i got it from Marx computers, is it my walls or is the router bad, and do you use omni directional aerials

I agree. A friend of mine noticed someone piggybacking on his network recently. Turned out it was a neighbour who didn't realise it - he wasn't actually leeching - his wireless card had just picked up the network. My friend was very conscientious and told him that possibly he should unshare the root of C: on his laptop :D

Mac address filtering is the way to go for a home network. That way only explicitly allowed network cards can connect.

MAC addresses can be spoofed. Using strong encryption and a strong key is a much better method, IMO.

so 802.11g will go thru 2 floors and a wall? the room is diagonally up from the internet point here in the kitchen.

you *might* have a little problem, depending on the hardware -- but you can always combat that by getting a better antennae (bigger, monodirectional etc.)

If you're really having trouble, you can always get a second wireless device to act as a wireless repeater, which will increase the reach/strength of the signal by 50%.

In reality, any modern wirless router should be able to broadcast through at least 50m of a house, so unless your house is absolutely huge, you won't have an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,918 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

good stuff. dont think its 50m anyway! lol. just a regular gaf in tallaght.

see in reality, its like less then 10m, but..bah i dunno. ill have to look into it more. just as long as it can go thru 2 floors and a concrete wall or 2 then im fine.

Get a MIMO router. They'll do better speeds and strength. Read a test of a Belkin MIMO one a month or so back. They could still get a good signal and surf the web even when they brought the laptop out of their offices, across the road and into an underground car park :D

If you're worried about issues with signal loss because of a few walls because you're moving the gear into the attic then I'd recommend this beauty.

    http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WPN824.php

I'm up in the attic of my house and this is sitting on top of a cupboard in the kitchen extention downstairs. I've had it up and running just over a month and it's solid as a rock. ;)

How much do those bad boys cost? Look very nice.

Iv a wireless network here, and it works brilliant. Here is how I have/had it set-up:

The PC with the Internet in one room, and my PC in the main sitting room. It had to go through two doors, and 3 rooms to reach the other PC.

Broadcasting from the same room, I was able to use the wireless network connection in another building across the yard. It broadcaster through the wall, out into the short yard, into the building.

Again, broadcasting from the same room, it was able to go up into my current location - the floor above the PC (the PCs are on opposite sides of the house however).

Kinda hard to explain, but my connections been all over the house and outside it and its been fine. Using the normal set-up. :)

    Wireless all the way dude.

good stuff. looks good. one question though. do i get the wireless cards with the routers or will i have to buy them separately?

As far as I know, you gotta buy them all sperate.

U might get a low signal if your Wireless router is going at ground level, but depends on the hardware again, if it was the WIFI in the attic it would be brilliant, Your only bet to save yourself hassel is to borrow a router and card and see if it works!? The bee's knees would be to run a cable!

I got mine through this crowd at €105.72 and it's basically just a link to amazon.co.uk so it's all good.
