Safely remove hardware?

I've got my MP3 player hooked up as a storage unit at the moment, and when I try to stop it on the 'safely remove hardware' thing, it tells me that it can't be stopped right now, try again later. I reckon I've got to kill some process that's getting in my way, but I don't know which one?
    Thanks in advance

Close all explorer windows that have it open, close any command prompt that might have it open, close any mp3 player app and if it's the AV holding it open then might as well shut down, remove and restart.

What make / model of mp3 player?
Capt'n's suggestions are spot on - there may be proprietary software taking control of it, which should provide a disconnect option then.

It's a creative zen sleek. I tried closing everything then stopping it, and still no luck, so I just shutdown in the end.

If you're using Windows Explorer to transfer files across to it, make sure you click back on your hard drive before you close the Explorer window. That might help. Also, have you tried clicking the safely remove hardware for a 2nd time? Have this problem some times with my iRiver.
