bittorrent for linux?

I've installed the official client for bittorrent on a Fedora Core 4 server, but the speeds are absolutely horrible; on a connection with 3Mb, I'm struggling to get past 30kbps down (when I've tried multiple torrents, the speed is spread amongst them). In windows, when using Azureus, speeds usually top that - probably 60Kb on average, 100kb+ on popular torrents like the fedora core DVD.

I dont know if it helps, but I'm using Digiweb; and additionally, the entire home network's internet speed seems to suffer when downloading w/ the server, it seems everything just slows for no good reason. I placed a network monitor on th panel in Gnome/KDE (cant remember now) and it often showed 100% network usage with only 30kb download -- this is pathetic, really.

Try downloading the normal i.e. non-torrent way and see if the same thing happens - it may be a more general network config issue.

well, I've changed the ports... and it seems to have sped up somewhat (at least on one torrent), from 5-12kbps to 24-35kbps. Apparently, nobody likes the 'default' bittorrent ports anymore (6881-6889), so I used random numbers.

also, I had a slight config problem in my router (due to a mis understanding of the config method), which had two rules routing the same ports (6881-6889) to two different pcs; which has now been changed to two seperate ranges.

still... I'm not yet convinced its all gone, but heres hoping.

Would you not switch to using azureus on FC4? It does have that diagnostic tool for telling you if the ports are configured correctly (I think....been a long time since I've used it).

yeah, well azureus does have some major issues:

    1) that NAT test you speak of returned success everytime I ran it, yet when I tried downloading anything AT ALL it would be stuck at 0kb down/ 0kb up

    2) prone to crashes, far far more than any other client I've tried.

    3) its slow as hell, sucks up ram/cpu

but it does have that web interface plugin... though not really worth the cost.
