    Crosserover/Ethernet 2 System Network..... How??

I work in IT but only ever use Windows NT/2000, both these systems are XP. Its really getting to me now and it kills me asking for help on this. All i'm looking for is to connect two systems via Ethernet for file sharing.

No Routers, Servers, Wi-Fi or anything... just a crossover cable.
I've used all the wisards and sill its point blankc refuses to work so any help would be excellent. Links to Step-by-Step would be cool too.

    Cheers Guys!

    Forget the wizards.

1.Plug the cable into each machine.

    2.
manually assign an IP address to each machine..
    Per machine:
Start -> run -> ncpa.cpl to open the Network Connections

    Right-click on the network card
    Left-click properties
    Left-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    Left-click the Properties button
Select Use the following IP address
    Enter:
    IP address: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    (Leave the rest blank)
    Click OK.

While you're still in the LAN (card) connection properties, switch to the Advanced Tab.
Choose the Windows Firewall settings, and switch to OFF. [This is for troubleshooting -in XP it's on by default.. Ensure other firewalls are disabled also!]

Move on to the next machine, and follow the above steps, but ensure that you give it a uniqure IP address (i.e. 192.168.0.3 subnet, etc are the same, and firewalls should be disabled)

That should do it for the connection.

    TEST:
From each machine: Start -> run -> cmd -> ping othermachineipaddress

If this fails: try another cable.
If it works, and you need help with the filesharing..come back.

(The above was written in a simplified form for future/others benefit)

It's usually the XP firewall that catches people out on when migrating..
You got the long version for the first part because you didn't specify where/what part it's not working .. Have you got the machines connected? Any error messages? Is service pack 2 installed? Is it XP Home or Pro?
