Boot problem

So i put Ubuntu on my PC, seems a grand OS,thought I might use it more but obviously not. With Ubuntu on my system I had to dual boot windows and linux using GRUB loader. Ive gotten tired of linux so i decided to go to windows recovery console and fixmbr to remove GRUB. All seemed to go to plan until i rebooted my machine...
When it boots I get the dell splash screen and then "GRUB Loading stage1.5" as if its going to boot into GRUB. The screen just stays there and does nothing. Tried to fixmbr again and still the same.Writing this from my laptop at the mo and I really dont want to have to reinstall Windows XP,I have everything set up as I like it.

Didnt know whether to put this in the Windows or unix forum so I figured here would be the best place. Any ideas folks?

    aye..removed before your reply...

you could boot with an old (98) disk -> fdisk the MBR and then fixmbr... not sure..

what was teh exact command (for fixmbr) tried?

    XP Repair?

aye. that should do the job..
does it kick up any errors at all?

    try,more explicitly:
    map (to get device)
    fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0

i'm hesitant to suggest anything else as the potential to **** data is too high... other than a Repair..

Ghost the partition now, if you can..

Using fixmbr from the recovery console is very similar to fdisk /mbr from a dos or win9x boot floppy. The only difference is that fdisk /mbr rewrites a new signature for the hard drive and this may make WinXP think it is on new hardware - but it should still boot up OK. It sounds like maybe GRUB was beginning to load from a partition rather than the mbr in which case probably the wrong partition was marked as active.
