Inspired by the Streetfighter 2 Thread. But everyone knows Mortal Kombat is the king of beat em ups! :p

All the blood, uppercutting people into the pit of spikes, ripping peoples hearts out, decapitating people, mastering Sub Zero's freeze and administering a brutal 40% damage combo....

Sub Zero and Scorpion are my favourites. Man, this game is so much better then Street Fighter....

I never liked Mortal Kombat tbh, I just didn't see what the fuss was, I feel the gore factor was the only gimmick it had to sell to testosterone fuelled teenage boys. Half the game that SF2 was..

I have a perfect condition copy of MK Trilogy on the PS1, only reason I'm really keeping it!

    Best fighting game. Ever.

I was an absolute master of MK1, Knew the game like the back of my hand.

Does anyone else remember those minigames between some of the fights where you had to hammer the buttons to smash through wood/bricks/steel?

Never really got into the other two games.

Not a patch on SF tbh though. Too gimmicky, not enough depth in the fighting. It became all about the Fatalities/Babalities.

As for MK4, that was a steaming pile of sheeite.

I've got Street Fighter EX3 on the PS2. It's pretty smart.

Must admit I had a deft touch for MK1. Never really liked the others though..., they over complicated the whole thing.

I always preferred it on the arcade though. Blood and gore wasnt the same on the megadrive. On the snes version, when a player got hit, the blood was substituted for a piss colour spray!:- on that note, I remember there were all sorts of rumours about there being a blood cheat for the snes. I think it was gamesmaster magazine ran a cheat during April one year, where you had to enter a combination of maybe 50 key presses before the nintendo logo disappeared. I remember sweating for days trying to do it... then, in the following months issue, they admitted it was an april fool's stunt. Absolute gem.

Mortal Kombat translated very well into 3D, not the same game by any means, but still a very good beat em up. The 3D Street Fighter Games are not very good at all.

However you can get the Anniversay edition SF2 on PS2, and you can always play the PSone MK Trilogy (best Beat 'em Up disc ever imo) on your PS2 also.

got MK trilogy on the N64. good stuff it is. I easily think this version of it is the superior one. MK4 is not so great and have played Deception?? on Xbox which is equally poor. Does anyone know a website listing all the characters Fatalaties? Have only been able to remember scorpions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Ah, in fairness its pretty ****e now on the N64 simply due to the shoddy controller which is brutal for fighting games. MK Trilogy as a game though is definately the king of MK games, I have it on the PSone where it's somewhat better then the N64 version due to the better suited to beat em ups controller.

I like Deception and Deadly Alliance but it's just not......MK! I'd absolutely love to see a new 2D version with loads of characters and beautiful animations.....

i think scrpions on from MK1 was block, up, up :D where he takes the mask off and burns them to pieces, classic

i loved the MK games, except 4.

Did anyone play the mk story game on n64, cant remeber the name of it, was pretty crapy though

imho mk kicks sf ass :D

yeh that was the one... lol.. was a pile of sh*t alright :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yeah it was painfully bad. I remember I knew someone who paid 40 pounds for it at the time!

It was like playing a crappy NES game or something, we were all just there surrounding the tv, prepared to be blown away, and once he started playing all we could manage was many speechless, horrified looks....

That very same copy was shortly sold on for 1.50, played once by its new owner, and relegated to the dusty corner, never to be played again....

There was some sort of MK: Special Forces game in the works at one stage as well, featuring Sonya Blade and Jax as the main characters. God knows what happened to it, but it was probably all for the best....
